Kerry: Mum cried as I wanted to act
Kerry Washington has revealed her mum broke down and sobbed when she told her she wanted to be an actress.
The Scandal star's parents feared she would end up as another "starving artist" when she told them in the 90s that she wanted to pursue a screen career.
However, Kerry, 37, told USA Today that her mum and dad are thrilled for her now.
The actress, who became a mother in April when she and husband Nnamdi Asomugha welcomed daughter Isabelle, said: "My parents are really happy for me.
"I think they're the kind of parents who are interestingly more proud of the fact that I have an appointed position in the White House than they are of the show, or that I've been able to be experiencing such joy in my personal life. Those things matter to them more.
"But they're grateful I'm not the starving artist they feared I would be."
Kerry has earned two Emmy nominations for her portrayal of Capitol Hill fixer Olivia Pope.
