We're used to seeing Katie Holmes red carpet ready, but the actress was a far cry from her normal self in New York.

The mother-of-one is currently filming her directorial debut in Manhattan in All We Had and was fully immersed in her character during filming yesterday.

The Batman Begins star (36) wore a strapless denim playsuit from Topshop, wearing smudged makeup and unkempt hair while filming at a Walmart opposite her young co-star Lovie Findlay, who plays her 13-year-old daughter.

Katie bought the film rights to the book All We Had last year and production began last month.

Producer Jane Rosenthal said the former Dawson's Creek actress has a lot to bring to the table.

Katie has such a clear vision for the book's irreverent, original mother-daughter relationship. Her passion for the material, along with Josh Boone's ability to tell stories grounded in the comedy and drama of every day, will truly bring these characters to life," she said in a statement.
