Kathryn Thomas says she is so proud of old school friend Leo Varadkar coming out
The Voice of Ireland host (36) has revealed that she and Varadkar were classmates for five years at The King's Hospital in Palmerstown, Dublin and thinks he has set a "benchmark" for years
"You have to admire Leo Varadkar for coming out as a gay man," she wrote in her weekly column with the Irish Daily Star. "I could almost feel the weight lifting off my shoulders during his interview with Miriam O'Callaghan at the weekend.
Varadkar even name checked the presenter during his ground breaking interview on with Miriam on Sunday.
"It is wonderful that a friend I knew, before he became a politician, has set the benchmark for many more to come."
And Thomas, who is one of Montrose's most famous faces, championed her old pal for initiating a national conversations, saying he likely encouraged others, in particular teenagers, to come out to their parents.
"I wonder how many young men and women had conversations with their families about their sexuality off the back of that radio interview?"
"I have lots of gay friends and I know that coming out to their parents generally was so much easier than what they ever imagined," she added.
