Kate Hudson on motherhood: 'I alienate my children from my job'
Kate Hudson couldn't get her head around attending a premiere with her sons after working hard to "alienate" them from her job.
The 36-year-old actress has Ryder (12) with her ex-husband Chris Robinson and four-year-old Bingham with her former partner Matt Bellamy.
She's always thought it best to keep her work and home life separate, but the two collided when she allowed her kids to attend the Hollywood premiere of her new animated movie Kung Fu Panda 3 earlier in January.
"I’m kind of weird about taking my kids out like that …I’ve kind of alienated them from that part of my life," she told talk show host Seth Meyers.
"This movie kind of brought that to my attention, that I never take them anywhere like that, they don’t know that part of me really.
"I was like, 'Wow, they’re going to see the attention for the first time.' There was no way I was going to get through without Ryder, like he was my date.
"He wanted to do all the interviews and stuff. It was pretty cute, he was super excited."
Kate comes from an acting dynasty as her mother is Goldie Hawn, whose partner is Kurt Russell. The way she raises her little ones seems to have a great deal to do with her own upbringing, as glitz and glamour isn't what she remembers about her childhood.
"My childhood memories are actually quite visceral," she said. "Like my mom’s skin, one of my first memories was in Ibiza... lying on my mom’s skin and the feeling of warmth and sunscreen, the smell of sunscreen."
That said the star - whose biological father is Bill Hudson - did attend premieres when she was little, although they clearly didn't make much impact on her as she can't remember them at all.
Kate voices Mei Mei in Kung Fu Panda 3, with Jack Black returning as Po. The two didn't work together much as most of their vocals were recorded separately in booths, but Kate has enjoyed seeing her co-star during press duties.
"Jack is, he’s everything that you’d think he is and more," Kate gushed. "We are sort of kindred spirits, because we are both crazy and we sing and we dance and we get stupid."
