Actress Dame Joan Collins has bizarrely gone on Twitter to clarify that she was not arrested during a water charges demonstration in Ireland.

The 81-year-old actress, best known for her role as diva Alexis Carrington in hit TV show Dynasty, moved to distance herself from her namesake, an Irish parliamentarian detained during a protest in Dublin yesterday.

"No I am not the Joan Collins who was a rested (sic) yesterday at a Dublin protest meeting!!! The very idea!!" she said on her official Twitter account.

In a quick-witted riposte worthy of the sharp-tongued Dynasty persona, the other Joan Collins, a United Left Alliance TD (MP), hit back that she should not be confused with the British screen star.

"For the record I'm not @joancollinsobe as I'd never take an honour from a monarch nor did I wear shoulder pads in the 80s. The very idea!" she tweeted.

Veteran actress Dame Joan was awarded her damehood in the Queen's New Years Honours list last year.

Also famous for her roles in films such as the The Stud and The Bitch, she starred more recently in the new TV series The Royals.

She was previously a patron of Ukip, but said that does not mean she would vote for them, and has declared herself an admirer of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

On the opposite end of the political spectrum, Irish TD Ms Collins was among 13 people arrested yesterday during the installation of a water meter in Dublin.

The demo was part of continuing protests against the controversial introduction of water charges.

In a light-hearted follow-up to the Twitter exchange, she added: "Ok maybe I wore shoulder pads, there was very little choice in the 80s, but I'd never take an honour from a monarch."
