Jim Carrey labels health allegations 'irrelevant' in wrongful death suit by Cathriona White's mother
Jim Carrey is stepping up his legal battle against the mother of his late ex-girlfriend Cathriona White, insisting accusations about his sexual health are "irrelevant" to her suicide.
The Dumb & Dumber star (54) is being sued by his late girlfriend Cathriona White's mother Brigid Sweetman, who alleges he provided White with prescription drugs involved in her death. She also claims he gave Cathriona a number of STDs.
White's estranged husband Mark Burton previously filed a wrongful death suit against him.
Cathriona, from Cappawhite, Co Tipperary, had been living in Los Angeles working as a makeup artist and took her own life in September 2015. She was dating Carrey on and off since 2012 and he flew to Ireland for her funeral last year.
In October, he denied the allegations in the wrongful death suit, saying Sweetman and Burton are "driven by greed".
In new legal documents filed on Monday, the actor asked a judge to strike any mention of him having STDs from the case, because he says it has nothing to do with White's death.
He maintains a dispute he had with White about the issue occurred two years before she died.
The actor accuses Sweetman of going public with the STD claims to embarrass and humiliate him in a bid to push him into a settlement.
"Sweetman's baseless complaint against Carrey is replete with false allegations and has served to compound the devastation Carrey has experienced," the documents read.
"Although Sweetman was White's biological mother, she was estranged from White for many years and had no relationship with White at the time of White's suicide; in that regard, she will never be able to establish damages in this action.
"The false, irrelevant and improper allegations were inserted for the sole purpose of harassing, embarrassing and humiliating Carrey in an effort to shame him into an unmerited settlement and should be stricken in their entirety.”
"A part of their attempt to shakedown Carrey for a multi-million dollar payday, Sweetman and her attorney have riddled the Complaint with severe ad hominem attacks and allegations about STDs, none of which are relevant to the cause of death," the statement adds.
"Hence, none of these allegations belong in the complaint."
He also added he was left "absolutely devastated" by White's suicide.
Carrey is also seeking to have allegations suggesting he reneged on paying for White's funeral costs and claims he owns a private jet dismissed from the case, so as not to prejudice a court or potential jury regarding his reported wealth.
Ms White's family issued a statement in October saying they have no involvement in this or any other legal action.
"The White family would like to clarify the public record in relation to recent media reporting concerning their beloved, Cathriona White.
"Contrary to recent media reports, no member of the White family is involved in any legal action with any party in relation to the untimely passing of Cathriona.
"The White family remember their beautiful Cathriona as a wonderful, caring and compassionate person. The continuous media intrusion and speculation only continues to cause hurt and upset to the family.
"The family request that Cathriona is allowed to rest in peace with the dignity that she deserves," the statement added.
