RTE star Jennifer Maguire said that she thought she was "losing her mind" after becoming a mum for the first time - but hormones were to blame.

The radio presenter said that she suffered a severe outbreak of acne and mood swings after the birth of her daughter Florence in March.

The 33-year-old said that although it was the happiest of times, she suffered from hormone imbalances and urged mums to ask assistance to deal with baby blues.

Former Apprentice contestant Jennifer married Lau Zamperelli last year.

"I thought I was losing my mind two weeks after I had the baby," Jennifer said.

"I was at home and I think Lau dropped a cushion on the ground and I was upstairs crying for no reason. It was just the weirdest thing."

Jen said that she also suffered from acne for the first time in her life.

"Hormonal acne got me really down and I had it for a few months," she said.

"It got me down because I didn't know when it was going to end.

"I didn't know what to do and you're also trying to focus on the baby, but you need to look after yourself as well.

"I wanted to enjoy the baby stage and not look back and think 'I wasn't looking my best'," she said.

"I went back to work after 10 weeks and taking a supplement every day helped me stay on top of my own health, so I could do my job and look after Florence."

*Jennifer Maguire was speaking as an ambassador of the Pregnacare® New Mum supplement. New research commissioned by the brand found only 25% of new mums have reported looking after their own health and wellbeing in the period of time post-pregnancy.  For more information visit: www.pregnacare.ie
