Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky ended their year long romance due to the impracticalities of their 20 year age gap.

The Oscar-winning actress (27) began dating the 48-year-old director while filming mother!, which polarised critics. And she said their approach to the negative reviews began to cause some tension in their relationship, saying his obsession was "not healthy".

In a conversation with Adam Sandler for Variety's Actor on Actor series, Lawrence said she avoids reviews at all costs and felt conflicted by supporting her partner and protecting herself when their horror film was being widely panned.

"Dating the director was different," she said. "We'd be on the tour together. I'd come back to the hotel, and the last thing I want to talk about or think about is a movie.

"He comes back from the tour, and that's all he wants to talk about. I get it; it's his baby. He wrote it; he conceived it; he directed it.

"I was doing double duty trying to be supportive partner while also being like, 'Can I please, for the love of God, not think about Mother! for one second?!'"

The Hunger Games star said she makes a point of not reading reviews and particularly wanted to avoid them because she was protective of her then-boyfriend.

"I'm not going to do it, because if I read it, I start getting defensive, especially because it's my man," she added in the segment, which was filmed before their split one month ago.

"I don't want to sound in an interview that I'm defending what we're doing in any way. It's awesome, what we did. The people who hate it really hate it. But it's nothing that needs to be defended. If I read a negative review, I just feel defensive."

Meanwhile, the couple had to reflect on their future together when filming wrapped and realised their age gap was too much.

"There is a huge age difference, and they are different people. Each has to look practically to the future," an insider told People.

"Jen has yet to figure out her life and how it will evolve. He has responsibilities in life that she has yet to experience. Each was infatuated with the other.

"She was attracted to his brilliance and education, and he was in awe of her talent and personality. They have amazing respect for each other given the huge age gap, but other things were not on the same level."
