Pregnant RTE star Maia Dunphy has hit out at 'scaremongering' over alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
The 38-year-old is expecting her first child with comedian husband Johnny Vegas and has admitted she's still enjoying a drink.
However, she has found herself subjected to other people's opinions and "scaremongering".
Speaking to the Sunday World magazine, she said, “It’s not just the baby who invades you, it’s everybody else.
“Everyone has got opinions and the scaremongering is crazy."
Maia was a regular drinker before falling pregnant and filmed two documentaries for RTE on the subject of women and alcohol.
Reality Bites: Merlot and Me explored her own relationship with alcohol whilst she touched on the subject again in her series What Women Want.
Of drinking during pregnancy she added, “I’m not drinking drinking, but I’m probably having one or two drinks a week, like a glass of wine with Sunday lunch or a beer.
“But people look at you and go ‘Oh you’re having a drink? I thought you were pregnant’.
“And then the judgemental stares begin. I’m not taking heroin, I’m having one drink. So I tend to ignore them now."
The organisers of Oktoberfest must have been quaking in their lederhosen when they saw the publicity the "Sober for October" campaign has amassed this year. Although cleverly (and somewhat confusingly), Oktoberfest celebrations in Dublin kicked off on September 18, so technically you could have started your October boozing a fortnight ago and still give sobriety a go for the month itself.

This time last year, Maia Dunphy made a documentary called From Boom to Maternity, in which she toyed with the idea of having a baby. And this week, in the same Reality Bites strand, she played with the notion of doing something about her booze habits.
