Dawn O'Porter has spoken about being a first-time mum, saying her love for her son is "off the scale".

Dawn and actor husband Chris O'Dowd welcomed their son Art three weeks ago.

"I have to say, I love it. Art's given me a really lovely start," she said. "It's hard work and bloody relentless, but he's a really nice baby. I feel very lucky to have a healthy child.

"I was very emotionally ready to be a mum, so by the time he flopped out - well, didn't quite flop out - I was raring to go. He's very cute."

The 36-year-old TV presenter and writer said she was most surprised by how motherhood made her feel.

"People with kids tell you about it, but it's impossible to grasp before you experience it yourself. Nothing compares," she said. "I am mortified by the fact I used to tell people I understood what they meant because of how much I love my cat.

"I mean, don't get me wrong, I do love my cat, but the way I love Art is off the scale.

"It's a full body emotion, uncontrollable and completely instinctual."

Dawn also admitted she even misses her baby when he's taking a nap.

"When he sleeps I miss him. The relentlessness of this mission would be impossible without that love. Nature really is wonderful," she said.

Dawn also joked that her main exercise now is changing her clothes.

"I've never had such a good excuse to have so many outfit changes throughout the course of a day," she told Glamour magazine.

"I get dressed, he pukes all over us, then I dress us both up in something silly. What is there not to love?"

She said the couple are grounded, even though they live in Los Angeles.

"We're not very showbiz, so our social life is about real friendships and that keeps our feet on the ground," she said.

"I'm lucky to have great friends and a family that is more interested in my happiness than my success."
