Louise Redknapp has broken her silence on her separation from husband Jamie Redknapp.

The couple, who have been married since 1998 and have two children Beau (8) and Charlie (13) together, have been living apart in recent months.

The former singer, Strictly Come Dancing, and stage star moved out of the family home weeks after taking a part in London's stage production of Cabaret opposite Will Young.

And now the 42-year-old has opened up about the reasons behind their split.

"I feel I’m coming back to who I really am," she told The Telegraph.  "I have spent most of my life pleasing everyone else, worrying about being judged and thinking I should always do the right thing by staying at home, looking after my kids  and my husband. I lost myself."

She continued, "I think this happens to a lot of women when they get married and have children. You have this feeling deep inside you, 'Where did I go?' But I pushed those thoughts away.  ‘I’d think of my past life as a pop star as being “not reality”. Looking after the house and my family was my reality."

Louise, who sang with the girl band Eternal in the 90s before launching a solo career, gave up her life as a performer when she had her first baby.

"I became a sort of Stepford Wife, wanting to be perfect at it," she told the paper.

She said it was only when she signed up for Strictly last year that she realised that she wanted to go back to performing and felt "physically sick" at the thought of not doing so.

"And that is when the shit hit the fan. No one could understand why it was so desperately important to me," she said.

She also admitted that it has been tough watching Jamie's career shift from football to entertainment.  In recent years he has been on the panel of the show A League of Their Own.

"I was proud of him, but there was part of me thinking, 'that’s  my world'. I could see the excitement he got out of it and I knew how that felt. But it wasn’t me feeling it any more." she said.

Louise has credited her Strictly pal Daisy Lowe with helping her to regain her confidence, revealing that Daisy encouraged her to be body confident on the show.

She also revealed that she still loves Jamie but she needs to pursue her career for herself.
