Helen McCrory has landed the leading role in new ITV drama series Fearless, written by Homeland's executive producer Patrick Harbinson.

The Peaky Blinders and Skyfall star will play defence solicitor Emma Blunt in the six-part legal thriller as she investigates the killing of a schoolgirl in East Anglia.

Blunt is convinced a man has been wrongly imprisoned for the girl's murder and works against the police and intelligence services, despite powerful forces trying to stop her learning the truth.

Fearless has been described as a "crash zone where law and politics collide" by Harbinson, who worked with McCrory's husband Damian Lewis on US drama series Homeland.

The actress said she "knew and admired" Harbinson's writing for Homeland, in which Lewis appeared as Nicholas Brody.

She said: "When I was at drama school I was inspired by Prime Suspect, watching as Britain led the way in creating strong female characters to lead their dramas.

"I'm thrilled to be leading ITV's new drama - it's a thriller that starts deceptively small, then begins crossing borders to different cultures and continents."

Harbinson said he was "delighted" that McCrory has taken on the role of Blunt, who he described as a "complex and contradictory character".

Victoria Fea, ITV's controller of drama, said: "Emma Blunt is the kind of character who hates to back down. Against all the odds she's driven by the unfolding mystery of that 2003 murder and whether the killer was unjustly convicted.

The series will be produced by The Disappearance Of Alice Creed's Adrian Sturges, and executive produced by Damien Timmer, managing director of the production company behind the programme, Mammoth Screen.

Filming begins in September in locations across East Anglia and London.
