Ferne McCann's ex-boyfriend admits concealing phone while in prison to make calls to her
Arthur Collins has admitted to concealing a mobile phone inside a crutch he was using while in prison.
The ex-boyfriend of the former The Only Way Is Essex star Ferne McCann was being held at HMP Thameside in September ahead of his trial on charges over an acid attack at an east London nightclub in April - for which he was jailed for 20 years last week.
Appearing in Bromley Magistrates' Court via video link on Wednesday, Collins admitted to hiding the phone, two sim cards and two USB sticks inside the crutch while on pre-trial remand - pleading guilty to one charge of possession of a prohibited item while in prison.
According to ITV.com, the court heard Collins had concealed the phone because he wanted to make private phone calls to Ferne - who was pregnant with his daughter Sunday at the time.
Collins' lawyer, Audrey Mogan, said: "He did not have the phone for any sinister purpose. His partner at the time was heavily pregnant and gave birth the following November.
"He had this phone because he and his partner had been hounded by the media. He knows there was a phone in the cell but he knows the calls are recorded. Because of that he was afraid that information would get out to the media."
The items had been discovered by a prison officer when the rubber stopper in the bottom of the crutch was removed during a cell search. He had been using the walking aid after breaking ankles trying to escape from police following the acid attack.
Collins' case has now been committed to Woolwich Crown Court for sentencing, on a date yet to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, reality star Jeremy McConnell has been released from prison just in time for New Year, after serving just 34 days when he was given a suspended sentence for throwing ex-girlfriend Stephanie Davis around "like a rag doll" as she held their baby son Caben Albi.
