Graham Norton's debut novel, Holding, will be produced for television by the former boss of EastEnders.

Dominic Treadwell-Collins, who served as executive producer of the soap for almost three years, announced that Blueprint Television has won the rights to the chat show host's book, about a murder in a rural Irish community.

Treadwell-Collins, who is now head of television at the production company that made films such as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and In Bruges, wrote on Twitter: "Very excited to announce that we've won the television rights to #readholding."

In his last few months running the BBC soap, he oversaw the death of Peggy Mitchell and the return of Ross Kemp as her son Grant.

Norton launched his novel with a party at London department store Liberty last night, where he joked he had sold the rights for enough money to buy the shop.
