English rugby fans are to have their tweets of support beamed on to the roof of The O2 arena.

A space the size of 10 rugby pitches will be used for thousands of fans to share their messages of support, proudly bearing the hashtag #WearTheRose.

They will be part of the O2's Rose Army of fans, and sports stars Jonny Wilkinson, Victoria Pendleton and James Anderson were among the first people to see their tweets in giant lights.

Ahead of the start of the Rugby World Cup on Friday, soprano Laura Wright launched the projection with a patriotic burst of Jerusalem from the roof of the east London venue.

Wright said the event was "like nothing else I've ever experienced", adding: "I will be supporting the team so I hope it encourages the whole of England to do the same."

A total of 68 projectors and over 144 moving head light fixtures have been attached to the interior and exterior of the venue's masts. The show is also synced with LED screens that surround the arena.

During the seven-week tournament, thousands of tweets will appear on top of The O2 from sunset to midnight every day and each time England play.

The light show covers over 10,000 square metres and takes 14,120 man hours to produce. Riggers will have to climb on average 2,800ft per day.

England head coach Stuart Lancaster said: "We are in a unique position to be playing on home soil and have the support of a nation behind the team. That support can be the difference and we are calling the entire English population to rally and get behind the team.

"We are ready and will do everything in our power to represent the shirt and nation with pride."

Any fans who want to tweet their messages of support using #WearTheRose can go online - at www.o2.co.uk/weartherose - for more information.
