DWTS Hughie Maughan sustains injuries after 'homophobic attack' in Dublin city centre
Former Dancing with the Stars contestant Hughie Maughan claims he was beaten in an alleged homophobic attack in Dublin city centre in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The reality TV star took to Facebook to share a photo of the injuries he sustained in the attack.
"Me and Ryan went to an awards [show] in Dublin and ended up on a night out and a bunch of lads launched a homophobic attack on us," he wrote on the social media site.
Speaking to Independent.ie, Hughie claims that during the incident he was subjected to verbal homophobic abuse.
He said that he had been enjoying a night out with his fiancee Ryan Ruckledge when he said the pair were confronted by a group of hostile people on George's Street.
They had been drinking in Dublin nightclub Lillie's Bordello after an awards show in the city centre. He said they decided to call it a night at 3am and walked along George's Street to get a taxi home when the incident occured.
"We'd been minding our own business. Not causing harm to anyone. We were on our way home after having a really good night at the awards show.
"It was a group of about four or five lads and one girl. They were eating a take-away and seemed to be on their way home. We walked by them and they shouted after us. One of them called me a c**t and the others used some really derogatory homophobic terms. It was awful," he said.
Hughie claimed that he sustained cuts on his head and bruises all over his hands, while his head was badly swollen from the beating.
"I have a lump on the side of my head from where the girl pulled some of my hair out. I also have a cut above my eye. We tried to defend ourselves and fought back.
"Thankfully, though, some of the security guards from nearby shops and clubs stepped in to help us. We eventually managed to get away from it and get a cab home.
"I'm sore all over but I feel really shaken by the whole thing."
Hughie explained that his partner Ryan's foot is fractured.
The TV star has not yet reported the incident to the Gardai.
