The makers of political satire Veep are finding it more difficult to parody American politics after the rise of Donald Trump, according to one of its stars.

Tony Hale, who plays the president's sycophantic personal aide Gary Walsh in the comedy series on Sky Atlantic, said a character like the billionaire tycoon would not have been believed if he had been created by the show.

Mr Trump is the Republican Party's presumptive nominee for the US presidential election, but has caused controversy with some of his proposed policies, including building a wall on the country's border with Mexico and temporarily banning Muslims from entering America.

Hale told the Press Association: "There's already a comedy happening on the news. We might not need Veep any more.

"It's a little freaky. The crazy thing is if somebody came to us and gave us a character like Donald Trump and what he's said, the writers would be like, 'That's too broad'. No one would believe it. Well it's happening."

Veep, created by The Thick Of It writer Armando Iannucci, has won multiple Emmys since first airing in 2012, including outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series in 2013 and 2015 for Hale.

The actor, who voices a character in the new Angry Birds movie, said both The Thick Of It and Veep shared "the same creative insults".

Speaking at the film's premiere in Los Angeles, he said: "We have new writers because the Brits wanted to spend more time with their families, which I have huge appreciation for. The way they are creative with their insults blows my mind.

"Even The Thick Of It, you're like, 'Who says this stuff?' It's so creative. You guys put down people very well."
