David Cameron is hoping his knack for picking The Great British Bake Off winner will hold true when his wife appears on the show.

The Prime Minister tipped Nadiya Hussain to be crowned champion during the last series of the ratings topper and said he hopes his support will "have the same effect" when Samantha appears on the charity version.

In an interview for Stylist magazine, Mr Cameron said he cooks dinner for the family some evenings but would "rather fight an election than make pastry from scratch".

Mrs Cameron will be one of 16 high profile figures taking part The Great Sport Relief Bake Off to raise money for the charity.

Former shadow chancellor Ed Balls, singer Kimberley Walsh and actor Alison Steadman, are among contestants vying to be crowned star baker.

Giving an insight into life inside No 10, Mr Cameron told the magazine the family had "packed everything up in the flat" before the general election "just in case".

He added: " Samantha and I regularly host receptions for some of Britain's heroes. We've had everyone from the Ebola medics to the England women's rugby team. They make you truly proud to be British. Or some nights I'll cook dinner - Italian sausage meat pasta is a family favourite.

" I sometimes head over to Parliament for a vote. MPs can sit well into the night. I then go to bed, with my BlackBerry still buzzing. As I do, my red box is delivered, ready for the next day. When I have time, I try to watch some TV with the kids. Nancy and I love The Great British Bake Off.

"We backed Nadiya to win in the last series. We're hoping our support will have the same effect on Sam when she appears on The Great Sport Relief Bake Off in March. I don't envy her. I'd rather fight an election than make pastry from scratch."

Mr Cameron is among a host of politicians who have given interviews for the 300th edition of the Stylist.
