Coldplay frontman Chris Martin’s split from wife Gwyneth Paltrow made him realise where he was going wrong with his life, admitting he was in a “low place”.

The musician separated from his actress spouse last year, following just over 10 years of marriage. Chris now has a new perspective on life and realises how much things have changed in the past few years.

“[The split allowed me to] figure out where I've gone wrong in my way of looking at the world,” Chris said in an interview with Australian radio station 2DayFM’s Rove and Sam on Monday. “A few years ago I was in a low place in my life and was feeling kind of down and confused.”

While Chris is often reluctant to publicly discuss his private life, he was happy to speak candidly about the breakdown of his marriage during the interview. He insists it’s no big secret that he was struggling with personal issues during the last stages of his relationship with Gwyneth.

“I went through some big changes,” he shared. “Everyone knows about them.”

The 38-year-old star went on to reveal that a few simple acts of kindness from those closest to him helped him to re-evaluate his life and get back on track. Chris – who has two children, 11-year-old Apple and Moses, nine, with Gwyneth – now feels like a totally different person.

“Some friends gave me a book and a poem and those two things started me off on this whole journey where I just feel so happy to be alive,” he explained. “That may sound a little simple but I suddenly feel very grateful to be alive and if it's coming across then that's great to hear.”

Chris has been busy of late working on new material with Coldplay, and their seventh album, A Head Full of Dreams, is due to be released next month. The British band have previously hinted it could be their last offering, and Chris has referred to the record as “the completion of something”.
