The 53-year-old opened up to the Irish Sun on Sunday today, revealing his worries about leaving his family in financial debt after he passes away.

“I wondered this week ‘Is this my last Christmas because the cancer I have is incurable?’” he said.

“It’s just a matter of trying every day to hold it back. There is simply nothing that can be done but you don’t waste your days wondering ‘why me’, that’s just the way it is.”

The Dublin-born singer was diagnosed with Amyloidosi - a rare disease which causes deposits of abnormal protein throughout the body.

In June 2013, notable Irish musicians including U2 came together to organise a ‘Night for Christy’ benefit in order to raise much needed funds to cover his costly medical bills.

“It’s not something I’d necessarily want. The first one could never really be repeated but I might be forced into it,” he confessed, as his hospital bills continue to mount.

“Sometimes I’d prefer to stay at home and not gig but financially I have no choice….I don’t want to die and leave [my family] with loads of bleedin’ bills, I am going to try and sort all that out before I go.”

He confesses it’s increasingly difficult to plan gigs, due to his extensive chemotherapy.

“We were considering going to Dubai for some shows, but you simply can’t plan that far ahead,” he states.
