Aoibhin Garrihy has said that she is "so proud" of her husband John Burke for being the first Clare man to summit Mount Everest.

John, who Aoibhin travelled with to Everest Base Camp at the beginning of April, reached the summit of the earth's highest mountain at 9:45am local time.

Taking to Instagram, the former Fair City actress said: "At 9:45am local time John Burke became the first Clare man to successfully summit Mt Everest...so so proud of him and now hoping for a safe descent."

Since tying the knot last year, the couple have had a busy start to their marriage, with Aoibhin reaching the final of RTE's Dancing with the Stars in March before travelling to Nepal.

After leaving Base Camp four weeks ago, Aoibhin says she's trying to keep herself busy on days when there's little communication and not focus on the level of risk undertaking the challenge brings.

"I stayed a night at Base Camp with John and all through the night you could hear the avalanches," she told Irish Tatler.

"It's a really strange place to be honest, it doesn't feel like humans should be there! But you can't hold back the tide - if someone wants to do something you have to let them do it."

"I'm not going to be the witchy wife that says no, but at the same time, I'm sure he knows!"
