1999 might seem like a lifetime ago, especially for these eight power couples who have since moved on.
"It must have been love, but it's over now," sang Roxette back in the 1990s. The decade that gave us mood rings, roller blades, New Balance trainers and slap bracelets also gave us some of the most iconic celebrity couples that we still fondly remember today. Their flames for each other may have been extinguished, but memories of the following eight couples remain fond in our hearts...
1. Courteney Cox and David Arquette
A list couple Cox and Arquette were married in 1999, welcoming their daughter Coco Riley in 2004. Despite separating in 2010, the pair remain close friends and business partners. "When you love someone, you want them to be happy, even if it's not with you," Courteney has previously said. The former Friends star is now engaged to Irish rocker Johnny McDaid, while
Meanwhile David married his tv presenter Christina McLarty in April this year, after a four year relationship. They have one son together, named Charlie West.
2. Sheryl Crow and Owen Wilson
This duo dated for three years between 1998 and 2001, even starring in a movie entitled 'The Minus Man' together. Sheryl once said, "I have always gone out with guys who were highly successful, which would seem like it would put me at an equal level. But what ends up happening is that one of you becomes smaller — and it was always me. "I do think that sometimes in order for one person's light to shine, everyone else has to dim theirs." She went on to date cyclist Lance Armstrong, but they split in 2006 after three years of romance.
Sheryl has since adopted two boys Wyatt and Levi, whom she raises as a single mom on her farm outside Nashville, Tennessee. Owen also has two children, one son born in 2011 to his ex-girlfriend Jade Duell and one born in 2014 to his former personal trainer Caroline Lindqvist.
3. January Jones and Ashton Kutcher
Ashton Kutcher has now found love with his on-screen teen sweetheart Mila Kunis, but back in 1998 he embarked on a three year relationship with January Jones. The Mad Men star has since revealed that she can thank the actor for her determination to make it in Hollywood as he originally told her he didn't think she would become famous. "He only has nice things to say now if anything, I should thank him. Because the minute you tell me I can't do something, that's when I'm most motivated," she laughed.
January gave birth to a son named Xander in 2011, but she has never revealed the identity of the baby's father. She is now dating actor Will Forte, her co-star in comedy tv show The Last Man on Earth. After a seven year marriage to actress Demi Moore, Ashton began dating Mila Kunis in 2012. They welcomed a child together last October and married in secret in July 2015.
4. Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey
Who can forget this butter-wouldn't-melt couple, who let camera crews into their lives in the run up to their short lived wedding? In 1999, Jessica was a mere 19 years old when she met her future spouse at the Teen People event. The pair became engaged in 2002 and married that October, after which Jessica revealed she had remained a virgin until their honeymoon. She filed for divorce in December 2005, citing "irreconcilable differences."
Multi-millionaire businesswoman Jessica has since gone on to marry retired footabller Eric Johnson, with whom she has two children. Nick married backing dancer Vanessa Minnillo in 2011 after a five year romance. They also have two children together.
5. Cameron Diaz and Jared Leto
This couple dated from 1999 to 2003, when both of their careers were on the cusp of hitting the big time. Rumor has it they parted ways as Jared wanted to focus on his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Cameron became more in demand as an actress. "I’m still friends with my ex boyfriends," Cameron recently said. "I feel like all my relationships are strong - friends, family. I’ve invested in my people and they’re invested in me."
After long relationships with the likes of Matt Dillon and Justin Timberlake, Cameron married Benji Madden in her Californian home after a seven month courtship in January this year. Rock star and actor Jared Leto is currently single.
6. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake
The nineties dream couple finally got together in 1999, after growing up together on our screens on The Mickey Mouse Club. Their double denim ensembles to the 2001 VMAs will always be remembered in pop culture history, but the pair called it quits in 2001 when Britney was allegedly unfaithful - spurring Justin to release the breakaway hit Cry Me A River. "I just don’t think we were normal; there was nothing normal about our existence," Justin told Vanity Fair in 2011. "We spent way too much time being the biggest thing for teenyboppers."
After a turbulent few years in her personal life and two failed marriages, Britney is now single as she raises her two sons. After dalliances with Jenna Dewan, Alyssa Milano and the aforementioned Diaz, Justin married actress Jessica Biel in 2012 and they welcomed a son Silas Randall together earlier this year.
7. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt
In 1999, life seemed like a fairytale for Hollywood's golden couple Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. They tied the knot the following year in Malibu, but in 2005 they shocked the world with the news that they were to split. Whispers of an extra-marital affair with Angelina Jolie turned fans into two opposing camps; Team Aniston and Team Jolie. "Nobody did anything wrong.... It was just like, sometimes things happen," Jennifer stoicly stated over and over again.
After short lived relationships with Vince Vaughan, John Mayer and Tate Donovan, Jennifer met Justin Theroux in 2011 and they purchased a house together the following year. The pair were married in a secret ceremony earlier this month. Brad and Angelina confirmed their relationship in 2006 and eventually wed in a private ceremony in France in August 2014. Brad and Angelina have six children together.
