#TBT: How far she's come - 10 years on from Britney Spears' meltdown
Britney Spears has come a long way.
2007 was a tough year for Britney and it was a tough year to be her fan. Exactly 10 years ago today, marked the beginning of a rocky road to recovery when she left a rehab facility and walked straight into a hair salon in Los Angeles and shaved her head.
The paparazzi took an almost morbid glee in her actions and continued to pursue her daily, in their hundreds, for the months and years following.
In the weeks that followed, tabloids reported on her erratic behaviour and her mental health status which came to a head later that year after an worrisome performance at the MTV VMAs, wearing a wig and forgetting most of the words and moves throughout her routine.
It was supposed to be her comeback to the VMA stage where she cemented her superstar status so many years before, but it signalled a troubled few months ahead - she lost custody of her children to ex-husband Kevin Federline and in 2015, she regained primary custody.
While she has never shied away from discussing her breakdown, she doesn't exactly welcome the conversation with open arms, only discussing it at select times with certain publications.
She told MTV in a 2008 documentary: "I sit there and I look back and I'm like, 'I'm a smart person. What the hell was I thinking?'
"I've been through a lot in the past two or three years, and there's a lot that people don't know."
She would become involved in an ongoing legal battle with her former manager Sam Lufti, who alleged she was using drugs and had a restraining order against her. He was later accused of drugging and abducting Spears and last year, both parties reached an out of court settlement for withdrawing his defamation suit against the singer.
10 years later, her father Jamie is still her conservator and controls her finances and approves major decisions in her life - a court decision which has become a consistent talking point in the US media.
These days, she is settled in one place and extended her residency at the Planet Hollywood & Casino in Las Vegas by another two years, which nets her $35m.
She performed at the VMAs in September for the first time since that 2007 performance and is currently dating Sam Asghari.
"I’m in a real good place in my life," she told People in 2015.
"I’m the happiest I’ve ever been."
