Mary Portas on gay marriage: ‘This is us, this is how we live, we’re a family like any other’
TV personality Mary Portas opens up about family life with her wife Melanie Rickey, and the revelation that her brother is the biological father of her son.
Mary (54) recently revealed in an interview with The Times that her elder brother Lawrence is the father of her 2-year-old son Horatio.
It was a quote that went viral, but the Queen of Shops host maintains she is glad she shed light on her personal life.
“I talked about it because this part of our normal family life,” she tells Grazia magazine. “This is us this is how we live we’re not going to hide anything.”
Melanie, who is editor-at-large of Grazia, gave birth to Horatio in September 2012 via IVF.
“You’ll always have to deal with hurdles as a same sex couple but by jumping this one - and talking about this issue - we hope we’ve made the way easier for others.”
Horatio calls Mary ‘mama’, Melanie ‘mummy’ and Lawrence ‘Daddy Lawrence’.
“It just seemed like the right thing to do and we were lucky we were able to,” Mary continued.
Lawrence was present with Melanie and Mary after the birth.
“He picked Horatio up and it was just very emotional. He and I walked out into the sunshine holding hands and I said ‘Thank you’ and he said, ‘It’s my pleasure!’”
The couple were the first in the UK to convert their civil partnership to a marriage. They had a civil partnership conversion at Westminster City Hall in London at 12.01am on December 10, one minute after the law came into effect.
“It’s impossible to express how important the change in the law has been,” Mary states.
“There is a sense of acceptance and with it, freedom. Gay people are getting married. Gay people are having children. I’m proud of the life we live.”
Melanie and Mary live with Horatio, and Mary’s children from her first marriage Mylo (21) Verity (19).
