Lena Dunham: 'I didn't get engaged on New Year's Eve because that would be basic'

Outspoken actress and author Lena Dunham has denied reports that she is engaged.

The Girls creator is dating fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff and last week the Internet went into meltdown after she was pictured wearing a stack of rings on her wedding finger. Lena has confirmed the couple aren't engaged, joking if that ever happens they'll make sure it's a momentous event.

"My boyfriend... was like, 'My mom called asking if we're engaged?' She has a Google Alert on him," Lena explained to People magazine.

"I also just want to say, if we're going to get engaged, we would be more creative than to do it on New Year's Eve. We don't want to be basic."

In fact, the jewellery which set the rumour mill alight is actually meant as a sign of friendship. Lena and Jenni Konner, her good friend and producer on Girls, each have a set of three rings they wear to show how close they are. There's no real reason why the women put them on their engagement fingers, other than that's where they fit.

"It's funny, I have a ring that my boyfriend gave me that I wear on my right hand, and like, clearly nobody gives a sh*t about – it's like a diamond!" Lena laughed. "And everybody was like, 'Let's ignore that diamond and focus on this stack of three rings.' I definitely had a feeling, like, 'Slow news day, dudes?'"

Lena is gearing up for the new season of Girls, which will hit US TV screens on January 11. It will see her character Hannah moving to Iowa to pursue her dream of a writing program, and the actress is looking forward to showing Hannah in a new light.

"I think she's putting herself in new and challenging situations and pushing herself forward, even when it doesn't always feel good," she said.
