Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx: the end of a clandestine love story
After six years, Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes have ended their relationship in much the same way it began: very, very discreetly.
For much of their relationship, it seemed they lived in mysterious bliss. While she focused on raising her daughter Suri in New York City, he lived bi-coastal between the Big Apple and Los Angeles, all the while ignoring any coverage about their romance.

Back in 2013, when rumours first began that Foxx and Holmes were dating, they seemed an unlikely couple as literally any potential suitor would have been for Katie after her divorce from Tom Cruise. Through much of their marriage, one of the most high profile in modern Hollywood history, she learned the euphoric highs and depressing lows of fame.
Because of Tom's links to Scientology, there were rumours around some of the bizarre practices Scientologists were said to follow and the church held a tight grip on her marriage. A detailed report by Vanity Fair claimed that her father, a Catholic lawyer, had been investigating ways for her and her daughter to end the association. In the same article, it was stated that Cruise's other ex-wife Nicole Kidman was deemed a "suppressive person" to be avoided at all costs and he had reportedly "auditioned" women to be his girlfriend.
But in 2013, a picture of Holmes affectionately throwing her arm around Foxx's shoulder at a concert emerged, and the fact he had previously co-starred with Cruise in Collateral added a new layer of intrigue. This level of curiosity would only grow over the next six years. A grainy picture of the pair holding hands in a recording studio in 2014 began circulating and was deemed proof enough that months of rumours they were secretly dating were indeed more than rumours.
The photo is legendary among celebrity news followers because it was, for many years, the only proof privately and publicly available, except for off-the-record sources and vague details about 'exotic romantic getaways'. In 2015, Holmes was spotted wearing a wig to meet her boyfriend in New York City, an attempt she never made again.
That same year, Foxx told TMZ: "Oh come on, you guys have been trying to make that stick for three years, we're just friends."
Any efforts to try to bring their private lives outside the shadows were dismissed after that night. It showed the extremes both parties were willing to go to in order to avoid 'going public'. Their devotion to secrecy is made all the more impressive given the obsession with celebrity on social media and the fact neither has ever publicly commented on the other - in fact, Foxx "stormed out" of an interview with ESPN last year when he was asked about Holmes.
It's not just their ability to keep a secret in the most transparent age in history that's impressive, but rather, the possible motivation for it. After Holmes divorced Cruise, it's believed he invoked a clause which states she could not publicly date anyone for five years.
Initially, it was passed off as another 'kooky Tom Cruise' story, but the fact that pictures of Foxx and Holmes holding hands on the beach - their first ever public picture together - were published in the same week the alleged deadline passed is no coincidence.
They looked carefree as they engaged in the same manner as any other couple in the world, with the added benefit of no longer needing to conduct their romance 'in secret'.
While they still didn't embrace the spotlight in the same way as other couples who take the opportunity to monetise their personal life, stories often emerged about their trips to Mexico or his bonding with her daughter Suri, which was never questioned by either party.
Despite the intense paparazzi interest in Holmes in particular, the most defining picture of them is from 2017 when they finally confirmed the long-held belief that they were more than friends.
But over the course of two years, things deteriorated, and without any evidence of stability beforehand, it's hard to hone in on the definitive turning point in their relationship's demise.
Back in May, they were pictured happily posing together at the Met Gala. Over the weekend, Foxx was pictured leaving a nightclub with 21-year-old singer Sela Vave, prompting the break-up coverage.
Between Cruise, Scientology and secret trysts, their relationship had it all, but all good things must come to an end - even if it seems like they never began at all.
