Once again, the films were routinely upstaged by the fashion at a glorious week for red-carpet style on the French Riviera. Vicki Notaro rounds up the looks that got everyone talking this week
Think Cannes is just a film festival? Think again. The serious critics might have been getting hot under the collar about the arthouse movies, but for the rest of us ordinary mortals, it was the sizzling fashion on the red carpet that really sent temperatures soaring.
From Bella Hadid's shocking hip-high split (sorry, just where was her underwear?) to Blake Lively's masterclass in red-carpet-dressing-while-pregnant, there's been something for everyone at the seemingly endless sucession of film premieres throughout the week.
The annual festival has drawn the Beau Monde to the French Riviera every May since 1946, but each year it's become a more lavish affair, with even more showstopping red carpet appearances than the last, to the point where it's rivalling the Oscars and the Met Gala as one of the biggest fashion events of the year.
Its European location means that the Hollywood celebrities are trying to impress the chic locals as well as the world's press.
Secondly, the red carpet is probably the grandest of them all, with a bank of tuxedoed paparazzi, a stunning staircase and an undoubtedly intimidating atmosphere.
There are no interviews with entertainment reporters and the A-listers are shot from every angle ascending the stairs in to each film premiere, so you can imagine the pressure to look incredible.
And to make it even better, it's not just one night of style - the festival takes place over 10 days, so the stunning gowns just keep on coming. For all those reasons and more, celebrities bring their A-game to Cannes - and more and more, it's not just those involved in show business that show up, but the most stunning supermodels, musicians and 'It' girls hoping to make an impression on the studio bigwigs and break in to the film industry.
In fact, these days the big movie stars almost take a back seat as the up and comers show as much skin as possible.
At Cannes, it's all about drama. This is the place to go all out, to wear a 10-foot train or leave your underwear at home (is that what happened, Bella?)
With that in mind, here are the most talked about looks of Cannes 2016 so far.
The Oscar-nominated actress opened the festival in stunning bright yellow Armani Privé, but it was her nude Alexander McQueen at the premiere of 'Money Monster' that had everyone talking. With her pale skin and red hair, it shouldn't have worked, but it did. Her womanly figure and minuscule waist looked amazing in the beaded wonder. Va-va voom!
The human rights lawyer was at Cannes to support her husband George Clooney at his premiere for 'Money Monster', but she ended up stealing the limelight from his co-star Julia Roberts and the film's director Jodie Foster. Wearing the colour of the season, butter yellow, she too worked a massive train, a thigh-high split and oozed old Hollywood glamour thanks to soft waves in her hair and sparkling diamonds.
You've probably heard of her sister Gigi, the supermodel du jour and girlfriend of former One Directioner Zayn Malik, but 19-year-old Bella is hot on her tail. Also a model and also the girlfriend of a famous musician, The Weeknd, Bella's dark and sultry looks are a contrast to her sibling's all-American style, and at the premiere of 'The Unknown Girl' she turned heads in a barely there red silk number by Alexandre Vauthier. Unsurprisingly, there was a slight wardrobe malfunction on the red carpet, but Bella didn't seem to mind.
The 28-year-old might be expecting her second baby, but she wasn't going to miss her moment in the spotlight. As one of the stars of Woody Allen's latest film, 'Café Society', this was Blake's opportunity to turn heads, and that she did in a variety of striking outfits. The most interesting though, was the bright blue, body-con Atelier Versace she wore to the premiere of 'The BFG'. It displayed her bump in all its glory, and she looked absolutely radiant. Wonder if director Steven Spielberg noticed?
We don't see much of Mossy these days, but when we do, it's always worth the wait. On any other woman, the red, draped vintage Halston Heritage gown would have looked shapeless and unflattering, but as always, Kate managed to pull it off effortlessly. Now 42, she certainly gave the younger models a run for their money, and she'll be appearing in the movie version of 'Absolutely Fabulous', set in the south of France, this summer.
She was in town with her momager Kris to attend the annual party thrown by Magnum ice cream, but while she was there the half-sister of Kim Kardashian attended the screening of 'From The Land And The Moon' in a striking sheer Roberto Cavalli dress. Now a high-fashion model in her own right, and seen as the one who's managed to make a career away from the klan, her time at Cannes might indicate that Kendall is looking for a career on the big screen.
