Recently, while I was in London, I went to see Emmy and Bafta-award winner Jodie Comer in Prima Facie at the Harold Pinter Theatre and I was absolutely blown away by this one-woman show.
Don’t worry, no spoilers, I won’t discuss the plot.
But what I do want to talk about is how Comer seamlessly — or so it seemed — commanded the audience all by herself.
It reminded me of the pressure we can feel to ‘do it all’ and be a one-woman show.
As the meme doing the rounds online says, women are often expected to work like they don’t have children and parent like they don’t have jobs.
This is just a snippet of how things can often feel.
When it comes to parenting, work, housework and general life admin, and all the while also trying to be a great friend and partner too, the juggle is real.
On top of everything we’ve got going on, the very last thing we need is to be judged for our make-up or fashion choices — the very things we turn to if we’ve had a crappy day and need a little confidence boost.
I may live and breathe beauty, but I try my best to never judge others.
Let’s cut each other some slack, be kind and support each other.
It’s the least we can do in a society that’s expecting so much from us, day in and day out.
OK, the thoughts of under-eye blush might make you recoil in horror but this trick is one way to wake up your complexion.
Just add a dot of your favourite liquid blush under each eye along with a dot of concealer and blend.
Sounds dodgy, but it works wonders to hide dark circles and brighten up the skin overall.
We might associate Littlewoods with fashion and homewares, but did you know that it’s also an amazing destination for make-up and hair care?
I did a deep dive on the Irish site recently and was surprised to come across so many brilliant brands that we all know and love, including Benefit, Marc Jacobs, Jimmy Choo, Elizabeth Arden and Elemis — a skincare brand of which actor and presenter Amanda Holden is a huge fan.
For the full list, check out the A-Z on the site (warning: distraction from work is highly likely).
One thing I am loving at the moment is reusable beauty, so if you want Bambi-style fluttering lashes, check out the Sweed Dina Pro Lashes, €10.99.
They can be used up to 10 times and provide a more natural look that’s still flirty and fun. See littlewoodsireland.ie.
Lash serums are all the rage these days but if your eyes are sensitive, the less product you pile on, the better, obviously.
So a mascara that does two jobs in one is a no-brainer. Lancôme Le 8 Hypnôse, €36.45, lookfantastic.ie, is a brand-new serum-infused mascara, designed to condition lashes and add volume while it’s at it.
It’s enriched with eight amino acids and sustainably sourced shea butter, which work together to moisturise and nourish every single lash.
And if you’re eco-conscious, the brush and bottle are earth-friendly too.
The figure of eight-shaped wavy brush is made from plant fibres, while the bottle is pure glass and recyclable.
And the added bonus for sensitive eyes is that all it takes to remove it in the evening is a gentle cotton pad and some warm water.
We all know it’s not just our skin that can burn, so Irish haircare brand Voduz has a new SPF line that works to protect our locks and scalp.
This Sun Saviour UV Conditioning Oil, €17.95, along with Sun Scalp SPF 50 Sun Cream for Scalp and Hairline, €18.95, will combat burning, colour fading, and breakage.
Yes, I know it might be a little late to talk about guy gifting, seeing as today is Father’s Day, but better late than never — besides, what’s better than a luxury gift that can be shared?
So, let’s borrow from the boys or vice versa! If you’ve been a little lax on the present front or just have no idea what to get the dad or father figure in your life, then check out these unisex ideas that everyone can enjoy.
Fragrance is one of the main areas to look to when it comes to unisex options, and, seeing as we’re approaching peak summer, refreshing blends that are sure to delight anyone are where it’s at.
I’m a citrussy-fragrance kinda gal, so Tom Ford Private Blend Neroli Portofino Eau De Parfum, €139, is the type of fragrance I like to put on to give me a jumpstart when I wake up in the morning.
Being a unisex blend, I can also throw some over any, um, bedmates that might be lurking!
This is a very well-balanced scent, as most of Mr Ford’s Private Blends are.
That mix of zingy citrus oil and floral notes with amber undertones makes me feel fresh, clean and alert!
Mmm, just the way I like it. See boots.ie.
Ashore by Amouage is a summer fragrance through and through and a great one to gift someone who wants to be on holiday mode all season.
This luxury choice is €360 for 100ml, so it’s a really special gift for the man or woman in your life.
A blend of jasmine, ambergris accord and sandalwood nods to the sun, sand and waves of warmer climes, while cardamom and turmeric are reminiscent of the scents and spices from India. See libertylondon.com.
Skin-wise, who doesn’t love Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, €22.50?
The award-winning all-purpose skin protectant cream helps to soothe, restore, calm and
relieve chapped, cracked, dry skin, keeping complexions hydrated and protected.
(Top Tip: I also use it on my brows; for prepping lips before lipstick; or for the glossy-eyelid look that was all over the spring/summer ’22 runways.)
‘Tis the season to talk about sun protection again and one of the newest products to hit the market is Avène Very High Protection Cleanance SPF 50+ Sun Cream for Blemish-prone Skin, from €12.75, Boots; Lloyds; millies.ie. and is from the Avène Orange range of sun care products, which covers all skin types.
This range contains TriAsorB™, a new ultra-broad-spectrum sun filter, which not only protects the skin from UVA light, but also High Energy Visible (HEV) blue light — often associated with phones and laptops.
Studies have actually found that HEV from the sun is more harmful to the skin than HEV from screens.
