Age may be just a number, writes our beauty guru Triona McCarthy, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't stay on top of our beauty regime
I was obsessed with Calvin Klein fragrances in the 1990s - see what I did there? I never thought back then, growing up in west Cork, that I would one day meet/interview/party with Calvin Klein himself - not to mention Kate Moss, who featured in the Obsession ads, and her then-boyfriend Mario Sorrenti, who was the campaign photographer; LIFE sure can take you to unexpected places.
Anyhoo, there's a new Calvin Klein fragrance collection, Eternity Eau Fresh for her, €88, and Eternity Cologne for him, above, from €71. This cool new double act pairs a feminine perfume with top notes of pear, blackcurrant and bergamot, with a masculine cologne that has notes of ginger and juniper berries.
I met the legend that is 82-year-old Jane Fonda, above, in LA earlier this year and oh my Gucci, I wanna look like her when I'm older! I'm guessing she's a fan of Ultherapy, the non-surgical ultrasound treatment that stimulates the production of new elastin and collagen within the skin, slowly sculpting the skin from the inside out.
I love how non-invasive it is - it's great for anyone with a fear of needles. Another fab thing about Ultherapy: there are no drastic changes to your face; instead, it gently lifts and tightens the skin. Ideal. After the treatment, there was a little bit of pain, but the results are worth it. The treatment is only available in Ireland's leading aesthetic clinics, with prices starting from around €500. I had a brilliant experience at The Dr Mulrooney Clinic on Eglinton Road in Dublin. See drmulrooney.com
While I'm young at heart, I'm definitely older in other places - groan! So I'm back to using a specific night cream rather than just my usual serum. Chanel's Le Lift Creme de Nuit, above, €125, is a real treat, it's a renewing night cream in the Le Lift line that launched recently. The range's signature alfalfa extract pairs with the new Neuractive Night complex, which stimulates and soothes the skin while you sleep, for glowing skin during the day. #sleepingbeauty
Before Botox, we had 'the Croydon facelift': a headache-inducing, scraped-back ponytail that temporarily lifts the face, hoisting the eyes, brows and cheeks. It's still popular: try a swingy ponytail, or fashion your pony into a sleek top knot.
Add Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, €43, to your make-up routine and thank me later! It'll set your make-up, control shine, and leave your skin with a soft matte finish, ideal for when you're wearing a mask. If you're an Insta hun, you'll love how there's no flashback in photos. No wonder it's the number-one-selling powder globally.
The new shade, Translucent Honey, was created for olive and medium skin tones; there's also Translucent, left; and Translucent Medium Deep.
"I'm at that age where my mind still thinks I'm 29, my sense of humour suggests I'm 12, while my body mostly keeps asking if I'm sure I'm not dead yet." I saw this line somewhere - probably Instagram - and I totally related (insert laughing emoji!). I always think it's funny that when we talk about ageing, we usually picture crow's feet and wrinkled foreheads. I prefer to call them laughter lines - or, eh, 'drinkles' - but there's a whole lot more to ageing than worrying about our faces. And we shouldn't even be worrying, as ageing is a massive privilege, denied to many people!
However, that doesn't mean we shouldn't take care of our gracefully ageing bodies, so this week I'm talking about the areas other than the face - our necks, our backs and our... em... you get the idea.
Even before I became an old lady - I'm totally winking at you as I write that - I was a fan of Kiehl's Creme de Corps, above, from €13, an oil-based moisturiser formulated with skin-nurturing ingredients like sweet almond and avocado oils; it's super for all skin types, really. The entire CeraVe range is both affordable and utterly brilliant at hydrating and smoothing the skin - the new SA Renewing Foot Cream, below, €9.95, is on my tootsies right now.
What's good for the face should be equally as good for the body, right? La Roche-Posay's new Effaclar Micro Peeling Purifying Gel, €16, is in the biz of targeting body breakouts - which are still happening to me in my 40s; I blame sun creams - and is super for sensitive skin. You'll find salicylic acid, LHA, zinc and glycerin in there, which are all great for tackling acne, wherever it pops up.
