Triona McCarthy: Sex kitten

This week, beauty expert Triona McCarthy is getting in touch with her inner Liz Taylor. She shows you how to channel old-style Hollywood glamour with a hairdo fit for the silver screen

Triona's trends

For my photo this week, I decided to channel my inner Elizabeth Taylor. And where better to do the shot than in the Elizabeth Taylor Suite at the Gresham Hotel in Dublin?

This suite was used by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton on their two visits to Dublin in the Sixties. The sophisticated setting also inspired my super stylist on the day — Gary Kavanagh from Peter Mark, the recent winner of the Spirit Award at the annual Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Hairdressing Business Awards. I’m mad about the boy — or should that be the man?

Gary is a genius when it comes to hairstyling, and so he set about creating our own version of the Mad Men look. To achieve it, you’ll need to make friends with a backcombing brush — Gary recommends the funny-looking, big toothbrush-type ones you find in most chemists, as they’re much easier for a punter like myself to use than a comb. Hairspray is also your best friend for this look.

I’m with Gary when he says L’Oreal Elnett, right, from €4.01, is the bestest, but he warned me never to use a firm-hold hairspray as hair should move — no helmets here! Gary primed my hair first with Redken Thickening Lotion, left, €15, and he then set about backcombing.

As my hair is quite long, he pinned it up at the back. His finishing touch was a hairband from Claire’s Accessories to keep it all in place. Whaddya think? Now, if only I could persuade Gary to move in with me to be my ersonal hairstylist . . .

Triona tricks

Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy.

Ha! If you want to minimise your muffin top — here’s a quick tip. In the shower, scrub your tummy with an exfoliator to help stimulate cells and improve your circulation. This will help get nutrients in and the toxins out.

The mighty wah

Wah, wah, what? Wah Nails has opened in Harvey Nichols, Dublin, that’s what! Sharmadean Reid is the person responsible for this uber-cool British nail-bar chain, who says: “Wah Nails was born from my love of graphic nail art and my inability to get truly fashionable nails at my local salons — my nail artists pride themselves on creativity, and a can-do attitude.”

A perfect philosophy if you want to translate trends into fingertip art — think rhinestones, crystals, pearls, gold studs and embedded glitter. These are used alongside the best-quality extensions, products and polishes, giving customers limitless design options to suit their mood, or match their outfit.

So, wah, wah, what are you waiting for? File this info away now. Geddit? Wah Nails, Harvey Nichols, Dundrum Town Centre, tel: (01) 291-0424

Why is bra singular and panties plural? Hmmm. It’s stuff like this that fills my fluffy lil head. Speaking of lingerie, I like to think of primer as lingerie for the skin. But seriously, primer is the real secret to transforming tired skin into a fresh, fabulous face.

For me, it’s like a magic veil that transforms my skin and stabilises my make-up, too. L’Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Smoothing Resurfacing Primer, below left, €19.99, is the latest addition to my lingerie drawer.

Inspired by professional make-up artists, this primer masks any wrinkles and uneven texture in the skin, making your complexion feel smooth and soft, with a remarkable velvety touch.

Many of Ireland’s professional make-up artists are fans, as I often see it in their arsenal of beauty booty when I’m having a snoop, oops, sorry, researching!

Cult product

Wooooooah! In only 18 months, over three million bottles of Lancome’s Genifique Youth Activator, right, €70, have been sold. That’s one sold every four seconds. In the world of beauty, products come and go at an amazing rate.

Then, there are the select few that really work, and they stick around and earn cult-product status. Genifique has accumulated more awards in the history of Lancome skincare than anything ever has before.

It’s not surprising, really, as it’s the world’s first skincare product to revive the activity of the genes of youth for visibly rejuvenated, smoother, more luminous skin in just seven days.
