Our beauty columnist talks practical gifts for guys, the return of the moustache, hun buns and the essential SPFs for fun in the sun
With Father’s Day just around the corner, let’s talk about guy gifting for the father figures in our lives, be they grandfathers, stepdads and more. Buying for boys is basically another talent I’ve been blessed with! Will, my better half, is a practical person so socks, jocks and facial hair accessories are a given. A total cliché, I know, but constantly trying to outdo ourselves with even more extravagant dust collectors every year is a waste, in my opinion, and practical gifts are sometimes even more desirable than their clever counterparts — so maybe stock up on what he wants, what he really, really wants.
Although, if you were watching this year’s Met Gala closely, you may have noticed a trend creeping up on the faces of some of the stars that attended — and it’s not even November (Movember!). Our very own Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley both sported ‘Pringles man’ style on the night. Yes, Jessie had the help of black marker but regardless — moustaches are all the rage these days.
So, if you have a trend-conscious dad in your life, it’s the clichéd Father’s Day gift’s time to shine — maybe that luxury moustache grooming kit will make a great surprise gift option after all?
If it’s the clean-girl aesthetic you’re after, then a slicked-back bun is an essential part of achieving the look that’s all over TikTok. If you never know where to position your bun, the most flattering place is in line with the outer corner of your eyes. Use your finger to trace from that point to around the back of your head and arrange your bun there.
This is an appreciation piece for Colette Coyle, an amazing aesthetician — who, coincidentally, looks a lot like screen goddess Sophia Loren. I’ve known Colette since she had her clinic on Chatham Street; she’s now at the swish Fitzgerald Private Clinic on Anne’s Lane, D2.
Trust me when I tell you, this magician — sorry, beautician — is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the latest treatments and innovations, so who better to consult with than Colette when ‘cleavage lines’ on my chest began to bother me and put me off wearing low-cut clothes.
Colette explained how these pesky lines are wrinkles that form when collagen and elastin below the skin begin to break down. Safe in Colette’s hands, I tried the RF/Stem Cell Treatment, a microneedling process that targets all sorts of skin concerns including acne scars, enlarged pores and wrinkles. This bespoke treatment also involved Calecim Stem Cell Serum, to promote skin healing and skin health. A ton of needles that create thousands of tiny punctures on the skin might sound invasive, but luckily there was very little downtime. The needle action, combined with the heat action, left my skin looking lifted, firmer and rejuvenated. It’s exclusive to doctor-led clinics, so booking into Fitzgerald Private Clinic will give you peace of mind that only the best, well-researched and well-formulated products will be used. The mature choice
“Style knows no age” is a major mantra of mine. Thankfully it’s one I seem to be saying a lot more lately when scrolling through social media, which is starting to become a place for confident older women. Step forward please, Trinny Woodall — the 58-year-old is a joy to watch online. Her beauty brand, Trinny London, was founded in 2017 and has given us lots of make-up-bag-friendly items, such as stackable eyeshadows, lipsticks and brush sets. Now, Trinny London has launched two new cleansers. Be Your Best Enzyme Balm Cleanser, €39, is an oil-based option, which is particularly good for the summers when we tend to wear heavier SPFs. It promises to remove everything and leave the skin clean and healthy looking. Then there’s Better Off AHA/PHA Gel Cleanser, €34. This exfoliant gel gently but thoroughly cleans the skin. It’s another win-ny for Trinny! See trinnylondon.com
Looking for a real treat? Then La Mer Lip Polish €68, is an absolute luxury. It’s a buffing balm for smoother lips and is, of course, packed with what the brand is known for – Miracle Broth. And there’s a blend of sugar crystals, marine minerals and sea-sourced exfoliants in there too. Kiss kiss! Find it at Brown Thomas and Harvey Nichols.
Hot, hot, hot
I’ll say it until I’m blue (not red, thankfully) in the face: we need to wear SPF 24/7 all year — but seriously need to up the ante in the summer. We all want to avoid major skin concerns and certainly skin cancer, which is actually the most common type of cancer in Ireland. So, this week, I’ve rounded up a few of the SPFs I have to hand wherever I go. If you’re anything like me, between packing for the kids and for myself, there’s always a chance I’ll leave my SPF behind. So leave one in the car, as well as at one at home and one in in your handbag — your skin will thank you.
A high factor with a hint of a tint is what Nimue Sun-C Tinted SPF 40, €45.50, will give you. This is a handy one if heavy make-up takes a bit of a back seat for you during the warmer summer months. And while it protects from the usual UVA and UVB rays, it also protects from high-energy visible light from our phones and computer screens, which is ideal as many of us are still working from home and aren’t meeting people face-to-face.
If you’re looking for a high factor that does more than protect from the sun, check out IMAGE Prevention + Daily Ultimate Protection Moisturiser SPF 50, €49.50. This one acts as a great moisturiser that isn’t too heavy. It can be used every day to protect against blue light and environmental skin stressors. It contains a pea protein that helps the skin combat harmful elements. It’s also paraben-free and free from artificial fragrance, so it’s gentle on all skin types. And, of course, it’s water resistant, so you can still enjoy the pool without getting sunburned.
For more sensitive areas like the face, Riemann P20 Face SPF 30, €26, is a godsend as you know it’ll be more gentle than formulas made for the body. It’s also non-greasy to avoid a sweaty look. It promises to give up to 10 hours of protection, is water-resistant and works well under make-up.
The face and body are the obvious areas but the hair needs proper protection from the sun, too. Nuxe Sun Moisturising Protective Milky Oil for Hair, €16.90, is not as heavy as other spray SPFs and it’s non-greasy so it won’t ruin your freshly washed hair. It also protects from salt and chlorine. It smells divine and can be spritzed before and after swimming for all-day sun protection and super-soft locks.
