Between that awful term ‘beach body’ and the rise of TikTok beauty hacks, the summer months were hardly going to arrive without some controversy, were they? The latest, errr, burning question centres around the correct application of SPF. Last year, a TikTok post on ‘sunscreen contouring’ by a young model called Eli Withrow went viral, and sparked an unhealthy trend. She used a higher-factor SPF solely under her eyes and on her cheekbones. And, based on a recent video she shared of her beauty routine, it looks like Gwyneth Paltrow might be a fan of this beauty hack, too. But don’t try this at home, folks! Eli and Gwynnie have received enough backlash to leave them more than a little red in the face. Slacking on SPF is not a smart move. To quote the Baz Luhrmann hit, “if I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.” Young or old, the sun doesn’t discriminate and we all need to stay protected. And, newsflash — you don’t have to buy a separate bottle just for kids. Shop smart and you’re sure to find a sunscreen to suit the whole family. Or go the completely safe route, stay out of the sun and hit the bottle — of tan, that is. I am looking forward to some al fresco drinks, though — and call me old-fashioned, but I’m not so sure about using fake tan on the kids!

The tools

Whoever who said a poor workman blames his tools was clearly thinking of make-up. The right brushes are a must for great application. KASH Beauty founder, Keilidh Cashell has just launched a capsule collection that includes a set of 12 brushes, above, €79.95. They cover everything needed for the perfect face of
make-up — so flawless, people might think you hired a pro! kashbeauty.com

The trend

Scent of a woman

Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle has been reimagined in a fresher and fruitier way for summer in the form of two limited-edition products that carry the iconic scent. There’s L’Eau, a light perfume mist, above, €82, and Le Gel, a shower gel, €40; both are part of the Collection Été.
Both can be used on the body and hair. L’Eau is a light and alcohol-free spray that isn’t too overpowering so it can be spritzed liberally before you head out the door. Le Gel is a 2-in-1 aftersun cleanser for the shower that will soothe any skin that needs a break from UV rays.

The trick

As the days get warmer, so do our beauty products — I like to keep my eye creams in the fridge so they’re extra cool and work better at depuffing under my eyes when I need to look a bit more awake.

The treatment

Mane attraction

Finally, it’s looking like we’ll be able to see people IRL and not just through our screens, very soon! But now that I’ll be getting up close to people, I’ll want my hair to look as good as the tresses of influencer Olivia Culpo, pictured above.
A new Irish-owned brand that’s literally making waves is Be Almaí. Founded by Irish hairstylist Caroline MacMahon of Hidden Hair in Co Tyrone, the range consists of the Wave Styling wand, €89.99; the Wave Styling Boar Brush, €13.49, and the Wave Styling comb, €11.49. The brush and the comb are super-handy accessories to keep the hair looking its best while you’re out and about. The Be Almaí Wave Styling Range is available to buy on bealmai.com (no extra import charges will apply) and from stockists nationwide.

The talk

Keeping up appearances

Does anyone else feel like they’re coming out of a year-long hibernation now summer has arrived and places are starting to open up again? I’m loving the buzz and hopeful feeling. What I’m not loving is the inevitability of wearing more make-up now I’ll have more places to go. But it’s not because of the make-up — far from it. It’s because my skin may not be the best place for heavy coverage right now. So this week I’m all about the miracle workers for my face and my body — the products we don’t mind paying the big bucks for.
First up, I love a good overnight peel. It’s always great to have something working while we get some shut-eye, right? Kate Somerville is all about skin health and celebs that use her products include Meghan Markle and Kate Hudson, so she must be doing something right. Her brand, KateCeuticals has a Resurfacing Overnight Peel, €92, arnotts.ie, that targets dark spots and fine lines thanks to the retinol, glycolic acid and vitamin E that’s packed in there.

This Beautifying Emulsion, above, €131.50, is the latest addition to Sisley-Paris Black Rose range.
If you’re a fan of Sisley-Paris Black Rose Cream Mask for the face, you’ll adore this new body product. It’s super hydrating and enhances the skin’s natural radiance and suppleness.
Finally, for a little summertime serenity, I recommend lighting the latest scented candle, below, €30, from interior staging specialist Natasha Rocca Devine’s The Secret Garden collection. A collaboration with Cork candlemaker
La Bougie, it has top notes of bergamot and tea rose, a 50-hour burn time and celebrates Natasha’s Italian heritage.
