As a busy mum, our columnist knows how time-saving beauty products can be a practical option and also add a little luxury to the humdrum days
‘Mom! You forgot to tell me it’s Mother’s Day,” my nine-year-old Maxi woke me to tell me, as his sister Mini, who is eight, was hurtling towards the bed with glitter flying everywhere . Can’t believe the same ingredients created such different children.
Anyhoo, shout out to all the mothers, whether they’re godmothers, dog-mothers — it’s all about the love today. When you’re a mum, though, it can often feel like the days just melt into one another. A change of pace from a new routine is an exciting prospect when things are starting to feel monotonous. But if hopping on a plane is not possible, for me, the next best thing is a new beauty product. And, seeing as it’s Mother’s Day, there might still be time to buy one for yourself or another mum in your life.
G5 Haute Cosmétiques is taking brave steps to improve our skin by experimenting with combinations that haven’t been seen before. The line includes a molecule called MMST (aka organic silicon). It promotes cellular regeneration and natural collagen production to revitalise the skin without any invasive surgery. One of my faves is The Cream (€80, g5-hc.com), which works to increase elasticity of the skin while hydrating it and helping to renew cells.
When you’re a busy mum, a make-up routine often falls by the wayside, so the secret is products that make a difference but don’t require lots of effort — oh, and some luxury always goes down well. Armani has released a nude line to join its eye tint range of luminous finishes. Crema Nuda (€185, brownthomas.com) is lightweight, hydrating tint that also blurs imperfections, making it a hybrid multi-tasker that will save time when you’re in a rush.
Aside from noisy kids, a new perfume often gets me up in the morning. If you know a mum who is already a Lancôme La Vie est Belle fan, then introduce her to a new variation called Iris Absolu (€107, arnotts.ie), which still nods to the classic eau de parfum she would know and love.
A supplement from Advanced Nutrition Programme (€58, thechalet.ie) can also save the day. Its Skin Blue Filter works by protecting the skin from the impact of blue light by 60pc, targets discolouration, combats the signs of ageing skin and even improves skin tone.
For the aromatherapy fan, check out these nasal oils and balms from Change of Air, which specialises in a range of natural, cruelty-free oils that sterilise the air to combat cold and flu. These herbal combos also help reduce stress and anxiety, facilitating easy breathing and giving a lift (€24.95, coasences.com).
1 Mac Lash Dry Shampoo Mascara Refresher
Mac has released this saviour, which will add definition, reintroduce the curl and add volume in an instant. If you have a big night out planned, pop this in the bag and apply when your lashes start to look droopy.
2 Ghd Duet Style 2-in-1 Hot Air Styler
€370, Peter Mark
A hair dryer and a styler in one, it can be used for drying as well as just a styler in its own right. It’ll also give hair a boost and add shine if you don’t have time to wash your hair. Far less damaging than the wet-to-dry stylers of yore, there is no burning or sizzling, just sleek and shiny hair — hurrah.
3 Nivea Energy Micellar Water
Nivea fans are sure to love this new product that’s packed with skin-friendly ingredients to cleanse and remove make-up. The combo of three antioxidants will clean your face quickly, easily and it’s great for super sensitive skin.
