Trendwatch: Paintbox Lips

Primarily a look about preppy, poppy, painty pouts, paintbox lips were splashed across many a cupids bow on the SS11 catwalks. DVF did magenta, Miu Miu went crimson and Marni opted for orange as only they seem to know how.

Having decided it isn't just a look for the overpaid yet underfed overlords of the world of high fashion, Trendwatch gives you the rules:

Feeling shy

Wallflowers beware. Ditch the usual comfort zones and leave those old favourites at home. This is a look for the bold and the brave. Think fuchsia, magenta, orange and red. The richer the pigment and the brighter the colour, the bigger the payoff. Go for the juiciest shades you can find.

Prep that canvas

The base should be glowing, luminous, polished. Lose the chunky foundations and heavy powders in favour of an all together younger and fresher look. Tinted moisturisers work best. If you must use powders, work lightly, blend blend blend.

It's not all about colour

As with all strong colour there runs the risk that getting it wrong will make you look like someone's batty aunt. Avoid going too far on your statement shade by keeping it matte rather than gloss and keeping the shine to a minimum. As a rule of thumb, if neighbours begin to murmur and children start to point at you in the street, you've probably gone too far.

Paint by numbers

Ditch the drag act and opt for a more bohemian flavour by keeping the rest of your look as low key as possible. With flashes of fushcia and overtures of orange, leave the lips to do the talking and the rest will surely follow. Block dress, plain dress, little black dress or be overdressed, the choice is yours.
