Trendwatch: Metallics

Trendwatch can safely report that silvery lids are staging a comeback. Tom Pecheux labelled it Modern Mercury, others gave it the monicker Heavy Metal. Having adorned the lids of many a model at Prada and Armani in SS11, this could well be the one taking us from summer to winter this year.

It's bold, brash and has more than a hint of bronze, but it isn't quite Barbarella. Here are the rules:

Look sharp

The look is modern, futuristic and more than a nod to electro styling. Ditch the blending brush and think sharp molten lids with abrupt sphere like edges that work to frame and stretch the eye. The usual dressings of mascara and liner are left behind and this means that brows must be bold to add some balance - big brows are best!

Lay it on thick

There's no room for soft feathery strokes where the Metallic look is concerned. Blunt brushes should be dipped wet and shadow layered for more intense depths of colour. Think charcoals, oysters and luminescent pearls.

Resist the urge to sparkle

The look may be metallic but that doesn't mean it should glitter. Choose shadow carefully and stay away from anything that might make you look like you're on the way to the office christmas party. The finish is matte and the colours are block.

Don't go overboard

The eyes are bold but the statement should really begin and end there. Big lippy, candy cheeks and overshading will take you from precious metal to trailer trash quicker than you can say 'now where did I put my orange lipstick'. Think nude lips and barely there bronzer for an understated finish.
