Yon-Ka Phyto Marine Seaweed Body Wrap

Each week Independent Woman investigates what's new and cutting edge in the battle to remain young and beautiful. With the summer fast approaching, this week we hauled our sluggish winter limbs to the Urban Day Spa to sample a Yon-Ka Phyto Marine Seaweed Body Wrap.

What is it?

A skin stimulating slimming treatment designed to whip our winter bodies into some semblance of shape for the summer ahead. Skin gets wakey wakey with a detoxifying sea salt exfoliation before being cocooned in a heated seaweed wrap. Any remaining dry bits are softened with a rosemary enriched moisturising lotion.

What's the process?

The treatment begins with a sea salt exfoliation designed to boost circulation and prep skin for the heated wrap to follow. Once the residue has been washed away, a paste of pure seaweed, essential oils and water is applied to the body. Skin is then mummified with muslin and an electric blanket warms the body to allow the ingredients time to sink deep into skin. After 20 minutes, the wrap is washed away and skin is coated in a moisturising lotion before finally being declared fit to bare!

How does it work?

Part massage, part skin wrap and part slow cooker! Toxins are massaged toward the lymph, the pores absorb the vitamins from the wrap and the seaweed and rosemary lotion leaves skin firmer, more moisturised and very smooth.

What are the benefits?

Seaweed is really the driver here. Packed with amino acids, calcium, iodine and vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K. It's great as a natural food source for skin. Great for detoxifying, seaweed also works on that dreaded orange peel effect and water retention!

How long does it take?

The treatment takes about 90 minutes but do leave time for the relaxation area. Kit-Kats, herbal teas and a mound of magazines mean an extra hour should be factored in for some seriously cushioned reclining.

The best bit?

Feeling lighter on your feet. Although six treatments are recommended for long lasting results, after one treatment my bloated tummy was no more and the orange peel skin around my upper thighs looked smoother and felt more supple.

Any downsides?

The wrap can be a bit itchy, which isn't particularly convenient once you've been wrapped in muslin and placed in large heated blanket. If you're going to do this one, don't shave your legs the morning before!

How much is it?

The Yon-Ka Phyto Marine Seaweed Body Wrap is €80 and is available at The Urban Day Spa, Ringsend, Dublin. For more information telephone 01 614 3434 or see urbandayspa.ie for more details.
