Each week Independent Woman investigates what's new and cutting edge in the battle to remain young and beautiful. This week, we continue on our current mission to slim without sacrifice by sampling the delights of the ECM butt lift .

Sounds intriguing ... what is it?

A rather revolutionary massage technique that uses an Electro Cellulite Massager to zap the fat bits, blitz that stubborn cellulite and lift your butt to boot. As well as having one's buttocks massaged with an electric current, firming gels and essentials oils are also applied to help tone, smooth and detox without the need for crunches, jumps and steps.

Sounds a bit painful .... what's the process?

The treatment begins with a body sculpting gel which is applied to the bum and the back of your legs. The gel acts as a conductor for the micro current which is passed through a roller with particular attention paid to the back and sides of the buttocks. Calves and thighs are also given a workout. Although the electrical current is gentle, it works by passing through affected areas to tighten, trim and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Once skin has been rolled and the fat has been zapped, the sculpting gel is washed away to be replaced with a cooling juniper, grapefruit and rosemary solution which detoxifies, moisturises, and improves skin texture.

Sounds hi-tech .... how does it work?

As far as I can gather, the roller administers a micro-current which re-educates muscle shape, increases blood and lymph circulation and enhances the penetration into the skin of active ingredients in the gel. These ingredients then work toward increased production of collagen and elastin.

What does it feel like?

Save for the odd prick of electricity the treatment is quite relaxing.

Despite the fact that the name gives the suggestion the whole thing may have been designed by Mary Shelley, the sensation of having all the contours of your skin massaged by mini-rollers is really quite enjoyable and not what you'd expect.

Who likes it?

Oh, anyone and everyone. Elle MacPherson, Linda Evangelista and Colleen McLoughlin to name a few. Many others are said to swear by the treatment.

The best bit?

Having spent a morning in the gym working on my arms in the conventional way, having my butt lifted with gentle massage and the benefits of an electrical current was much appreciated. The smell from the essential oils of the sculpting gel is heavenly and once you add the gentle background sounds of soft classical music, the whole thing becomes far more Z's than Zaps. Almost too good to be true!

Any downsides?

Although the toning effects were felt almost immediately this isn't exactly a quick fix solution. Regular courses are the norm and a healthy diet and regular exercise are also advised. Although my skin felt smooth and immaculately conditioned afterwards, the cost of regular treatments may be worth considering.

How long does it take?

As well as the gel, the zapping and the massage, the ECM Butt Lift also comes with a full consultation on which areas you are seeking to target. Best to allow one hour for total treatment time.

I'm in ... where to next ?

The ECM Butt Lift costs €110 and is available from The Pink Beauty Emporium in Dundrum. To book a treatment call 01 2157958 or call in to the Fourth Floor, Dundrum Town Centre, Dundrum.
