You only have to look to the beauty icons of the past and present for hair and make-up inspiration this party season.
They not only influenced their own generations but continue to influence ever since. Just as with fashion, beauty trends re-emerge again and again with the best ones remaining in the spotlight. If imitation is the finest form of flattery, then this gorgeous bunch have a lot to be proud of.
1 LAUREN BACALL
We can't mention old Hollywood glam without talking about Lauren Bacall, one of the original sultry sirens with her side parted dark blonde waves, strong, arched brows and red lips. A classic since the 40s, this vintage style wouldn't look out of place at this year's Christmas party. We think it's safe to say Dior might have drawn inspiration from her look with their 2010 Spring Summer campaign featuring doppelgänger model Karlie Kloss. And the best part? It's not that tough to recreate yourself.
2 JACQUELINE KENNEDY ONASSIS
Jackie O's signature style remains timeless and is easy to achieve. Pair subtly pink lips with natural eyes and big hair, or cover up your face with big winter shades and let the gruaig do the talking. Ray Ban even named their Jackie Ohh's after her and Lana Del Rey channels the chic waves and elegant beauty of the first lady at every available opportunity.
3 ELIZABETH TAYLOR
A list of iconic beauties wouldn't be complete without Liz Taylor as Cleopatra. The girl with the double set of eyelashes was born to be on the big screen. Dark brows and strong liner were the off-screen look that has attracted many a husband. Another Liz (Hurley) wears the same heavy eye make-up just as well and pulls off the full-time glam Taylor paved the way for.
4 BRIGITTE BARDOT
Bardot's big hair, sultry smokey eyes peeking out from behind her long soft fringe and plump matte nude lips made her Europe's more sophisticated version of the pin up. Men wanted to date her and women copy her. In fact, BB's look is such a classic that she's still rocking it at 80.
Kate Moss and Sienna Miller have worn their take of this sexy style, and we reckon Georgia May Jagger has nailed the look - one that's not going out of fashion any time soon!
5 MARILYN MONROE
Over 50 years since her untimely death, the poster girl of the 1950s is still selling snaps. She continues to have one of the most enduring looks of our time, with 30 pictures of Marilyn Monroe having just sold for over £25k.
The platinum blonde bombshell's iconic over-lined red lips and winged liner are often imitated (think Scar Jo, Christina Aguilera and even Madonna) but rarely duplicated. Her make-up artist (and close confidante) 'Whitey' used to draw on a mirror image smudge under the outer corner of her lower lash line as if her eyelashes were so big and full they'd cast a shadow. We don't recommend you try this one at home, it's a toughie.
6 SOPHIA LOREN
It can be said that Sophia Loren perfected the sultry black-lined cat eye we still see gracing the runways and fashion magazine covers today. The Italian actress knew the most flattering eye-liner shape (that's winged up and out to give definition FYI) and if you're recreating this look, add a few false lashes if you fancy a flutter. Sofia Vergara channels her style with a serious amount of sex appeal in this day and age. Must be something in the name!
The top model of London's mod scene, Twiggy's iconic pixie crop and drawn-on lashes even inspired her very own Barbie doll. Her heavy liner and smattering of freckles made her the poster girl for 60s teen beauty and Agyness Deyn brought the look up to date in the noughties. A strip of false lower lashes is a much more wearable way to showcase the look.
8 DIANA ROSS
If 'big hair' was in the dictionary, there'd probably be a picture of Diana Ross beside the entry. As the lead singer of a trio of big bouffants named The Supremes in the 60s, Diana was only really getting started in the style stakes. The hair got bigger with her career, first with the fuzzy microphone look, then with a fuss-free frizzy mane and later more defined curls. One thing was a constant throughout, whatever the look, it was always massive. In every sense of the word. Fleur East on this year's X Factor knows how to work her version.
9 FARRAH FAWCETT
All-American, glowy, brilliant white smile and flicked back hair, Farrah Fawcett earned her place in the Charlie's Angels line-up. Her signature flicked hairstyle was the look of the late 70s. Fresh-faced golden tones with soft, subtle smokey eyes and nude lips was her make up style of choice and one that suits everyone and never dates.
10 CINDY CRAWFORD
Brunette-beauty Cindy Crawford was named as the highest earning model in the world in Forbes 1995 list, and with her striking features and long, luscious locks, it's not hard to understand her success. Cindy's favoured make-up look has always been flattering neutral tones that anyone can wear, emphasising her natural beauty rather than masking it. At a time when eyebrows were getting thinner and more drawn-on, the supermodel wore full natural brows that we're all still trying desperately to achieve. With her distinctive beauty spot above her lip, we think Ireland's own Vogue Williams is a dead ringer.
11 GWEN STEFANI
There aren't that many famous faces that really stay true to a look as much as Gwen Stefani has over the years. Her commitment to statement lips pretty much every time she leaves the house has earned her a place on our list. Let's not forget her 90s style though and how much it's influenced the youth of today. Think drawn on brows, bindis and bottle-blonde hair, even Miley Cyrus recreated those famous 'bun-nubbins'. We think that's better left in the past and instead applaud Gwen's reluctance to tan and her never ending devotion to high-octane glamour day or night.
12 HALLE BERRY
The first woman of African-American descent to win an Oscar, Halle Berry made waves with her pixie crop in the early noughties. She's never strayed far from her signature look of subtle defined smoky eyes and neutral lips with bronzed glowy skin, proving that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. She knows how to make little changes as she gets older to keep her looking youthful like wearing more peachy blush and more definition around the eyes. We salute you, Ms Berry!
13 JENNIFER LOPEZ
No beauty icons list would be complete without La Lopez and her original JLo glow (she even named her bestselling perfume after her famous look). A true case of finding what works best for you and sticking with it, Jenny from the Block wasn't always so sun-kissed and sexy. Remember the pale skin, brown lips and dark ringlets of the 90s? Celebrity make-up artist Scott Barnes chose her as the cover of his 2000 edition of About Face where he shares his secrets on how to get the red carpet glow.
13 AMY WINEHOUSE
The late Amy Winehouse, with her beehive hair (complete with blonde streak and bird's nest qualities) and that eyeliner couldn't be left off the list, even if the look isn't exactly low-key. It might not be your every day popping out to the shops for a pint of milk kind of style, but Amy took liner to new levels and hair to new heights, firmly owning the look. Not so polished and perfect, more undone grunge not dissimilar to rock chick Courtney Love. For retro glam add burgundy red lips á la Gaga.
14 CHERYL FERNANDEZ-VERSINI
Cheryl Fernandez-Versini won the hearts of the nation with her sparkly brown eyes and cheeky dimples. Each week, thousands of girls are glued to the X Factor to see what the next look the style chameleon is wearing before furiously googling images and products to try it out on themselves (hint: follow her make up artist @karindarnell on Instagram for behind the scenes exclusives). Recreate her full lash look with the falsies she designed for Eyelure London.
15 KIM KARDASHIAN
If there has been a look to dominate the last few years of magazines guides, YoTube tutorials, make-up artist requests and even memes, it's got to be the Kardashian kontour, Kim in particular. The clever trickery with light and dark to sculpt the face has been the go-to glam look for the Kardashians for almost a decade. Kim's look has become more natural with age, not to say she's wearing less make-up but gone are the heavy smoky eyes and tangoed skin days in favour of long fluttery lashes, well-defined brows, highlighted cheekbones and, of course, the famous kontour. The sisters may be the biggest hair and make-up trend setters of our generation, the 7.6 million Google hits when you type in 'Kylie Jenner lips' will only confirm that for you.
