Dark circle defeaters
What are the first things that people notice about us? Turns out, it's our eyes and our smile that stand out most when we meet new people.

Dark circles, under-eye bags, discolouration and general darkness around the eye area are all-too-common beauty complaints.
So, are there any solutions? We all know that sleep is vitally important to our health, wellbeing and appearance. A consistent sleep routine will do wonders for that bright-eyed look - but some issues, such as dark circles around the eyes, are hereditary and nearly impossible to remedy.
When it comes to quick cosmetics fixes, however, there are plenty of options. Below, I've listed some brilliant under-eye concealers that will cover your dark circles, bags, redness, dullness and fine lines in one swipe, and give a 'lit from within', dewy, brightness to your eyes. These gems will take years off your face immediately!
A reliable trick of the trade is to choose an under-eye concealer that is one shade lighter than your foundation. The lighter shade under your eye creates the illusion of a brighter, more luminescent colouring and lifts the whole area.
Opt for concealers that have line-blurring, light-reflective particles, which will help smooth and brighten the skin.
Eight of the best: Dark circle defeaters
Did you know one of the world's best-selling under-eye concealers for years - the original YSL Touche Éclat - is not actually a concealer? The cult beauty classic is technically a highlighter. YSL has now remedied this situation with the new Touche Éclat High Coverage Radiance Concealer, €35. Just like the original, it has radiance-boosting, soft-focus fillers and light-generating pigments to brighten under eyes; plus long-wear, non-caking, high-pigment coverage - hiding everything from blemishes to dark circles and broken capillaries. From Arnotts, department stores and pharmacies nationwide.
If you want your under-eye concealer to last all day without constant reapplying, try L'Oréal Paris Infallible More Than Concealer, €14.99. Using high pigment levels with an elastic formula that spreads beautifully, this is one you can apply once and forget about. Just make sure you buff it into the skin really well when you first apply it, let it sink in for a few minutes and you're good to go for the day. Beyoncé is said to be a big fan. From pharmacies nationwide.
This isn't technically an under-eye concealer as there is no pigment in it - instead it's a transparent under-eye primer that fills in lines and crow's feet before you apply concealer. This brilliantly-priced beauty helper can be worn alone or under make-up. Use the tiniest amount, work fast to tap it gently into skin and let it sink in before applying make-up. Catrice Liquid Camouflage Under Eye Primer, €3.95, from pharmacies and Penneys stores nationwide.
My go-to for bright eyes in seconds! Charlotte Tilbury's Magic Away Liquid Concealer, €30, nails everything we want from a concealer - silky smooth, full coverage that never looks chalky or patchy and light-reflective, soft-focus fillers for a dewy glow. It honestly takes a few years off my face when I use it. Absolutely brilliant product. From Arnotts, Brown Thomas, BT2 and charlottetilbury.com
If your beauty budget is tight, check out this little gem. Essence Camouflage+ Matt Concealer, €3.50, is waterproof and mattifies the skin. It covers dark circles and shadows under the eyes due to its super high coverage - it even covers tattoos. A good option for oily skin types, thanks to its matte texture and finish. From pharmacies and Penneys stores nationwide.
This concealer is injected with a skin-smoothing serum as well as full-coverage concealer, so it's really forgiving on mature and dry skin types, and is ideal for the under-eye area as it doesn't cake in fine lines. It also feels very nourishing on the sensitive skin under the eyes, as it uses minerals to nurture and hydrate while covering dark circles and discolouration. BareMinerals BareSkin Stay-In-Place Liquid Concealer, €26, from department stores nationwide.
Bye bye, bags
This is, hands down, the absolute best dark circle-banishing concealer you will find. Big claim, I know, but try it yourself and you'll see what I mean. If your issue is colour-related - such as dark circles, redness or discolouration - IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer, €29, is your new beauty best friend. This highly-pigmented concealer is infused vitamins and antioxidants, and it never creases. Only the tiniest amount will cover dark circles on both eyes so the tube will last you aeons. From Arnotts, Brown Thomas and Boots nationwide.
In the bag
For a non-liquid concealer you could literally use in the dark and travels well, slip E.l.f. Beautifully Bare Lightweight Concealer Stick, €7.25, into your handbag and you're good to go. This creamy concealer pencil is applied after your foundation and can be blended in with your fingers. The silky pencil is super easy to blend and is lightweight in texture, so it's perfect if you're looking to brighten under your eyes, rather than heavy-duty coverage. From Boots and pharmacies nationwide.
