Vicky, my friend of 30 years — or my soul sister, as I call her — is the type of pal I wish everyone had in their life: fun, smart as a whip, loyal, full-hearted and brimming with zest for life.

She halfdances, half-skips through life and is universally adored. I would go to the ends of the earth for her... but I have to admit that when she announced last March that she and I were going to start sea swimming, I was more than a little hesitant to take the plunge!

On a bone-chilling Sunday morning in spring, take the plunge we did. And I have to say that immersing myself in that icy water was one of the most invigorating things I’ve ever done! Our skin was tingling, our feet numb, our breathing shallow, but our souls and spirits were singing! We are now officially hooked on sea swimming — admittedly, I’m more of a “dipper”, with Vicky a little more dolphin-like!

The benefits that seawater has on our skin, health and inflammation levels are well documented. If, however, you’re not really a water baby and don’t fancy braving the cold Irish sea, I’ve listed some gorgeous Irish marinebased beauts that will give you the skin-boosting benefits of the sea (minus the numbness).
