Ruth Griffin: Pucker up... how to have irresistible lips for New Year's eve
Make sure your lips are irresistibly kissable come the stroke of midnight…
In honour of tonight's New Year's Eve celebrations - when our pouts need to be perfectly primed in anticipation of potential midnight kisses - smooth and smoochable lips are today's hot topic.
Lips have taken centre stage in the beauty world in the last couple of years. Before that, liquid true-matte lip inks would have been mainly used by professional make-up artists and were stalwarts of stage make-up, but they have made huge inroads into the mainstream market lately. There is now a huge array of matte lip inks, liquid lipsticks, colour-stay stains and matte lip crayons on offer from every beauty brand - all at different price points.
Where matte liquid lip products come in very handy - especially for a night like New Year's Eve - is that they do not budge. No "bleeding" of lip colour, no teeth staining and no need to reapply: they are a one-stop make-up shop. Crucially, you don't need to fear any smearing or smudging either. So, if you do happen to get a special midnight kiss, your lips will be fully smooch-ready!
Enjoy - and happy New Year, everyone.
Treat vs Cheat
Make Up For Ever Artistic Lip Ink Kit This limited-edition, true-matte red lip paint won't budge - kisses or no kisses...
Fuschia Lip Service Set This kit also contains a matte liquid lip paint but has a bonus lip pencil, brush and concealer for lip contouring
Every part of our body needs regular exfoliation, but arguably our lips need it more than most. Did you know they have no oil glands and lose up to ten times the amount of moisture compared to the rest of our skin? Try the Bliss Pout-O-Matic, a jazzy little electrical lip exfoliator (think of it as a mini Clarisonic for your pout!), which comes with a lip sugar scrub, €47, department stores nationwide. (You can always go old-school and use the lip scrub with an old toothbrush, or, if you have a Clarisonic, use it on your lips!)
Plump up the lip volume
Full lips are having a moment right now (as exemplified by Instagram), with synthetic lip fillers the most popular cosmetic procedure in Ireland. What about a natural alternative? Beauty writers are raving about this topically applied lip-plumping gel: Fillerina Lip Volume Grade 2, €65, Marks & Spencer. It promises an increase in volume by using the pout-plumping properties of six hyaluronic acids. Apply five times a day with the roller-ball applicator and you should see a difference within three months.
Keep your lips deeply hydrated with this gem of a lip saver - SkinCeuticals AOX Lip Complex, €40, available from selected salons and skinceuticals.ie. Packed with vitamin E, hyaluronic acid and silymarin, it helps counteract the signs of premature ageing caused by environmental factors, cold weather and stress. Leaves no gunk or residue and is perfect worn under lipstick.

ELEGANT EVERYDAY PICKS
I'm a huge Charlotte Tilbury fan and use her Light Wonder Foundation every day. Also, her Filmstar Bronze & Glow is the holy grail for a touch of contouring. Benefit are the best for brows - I love their Ready, Set, Brow! gel.
DAILY SKINCARE WINNERS
I'm quite disciplined with my skincare routine. Mornings, I cleanse, pop on some serum and moisturise. Evenings, I always (always!) take off my make-up, then cleanse, add serum again and a night cream.
MY NEW YEAR'S EVE PLANS
I'm a big believer that it's not so much what you do, but who you do it with. These moments should be spent with people you love. I'll spend New Year's with my family. We always get dressed up and go to dinner and a party.
I think special occasions definitely call for a little extra sparkle when it comes to your make-up. I love MAC pigments for nights out. One of my favourites is called Gift O' Glamour - a fab rose-gold bronze colour. I also sometimes use lip gloss on big nights or a slick of black liquid eyeliner. Little things can make a big difference.
My TOP TIP TO KEEP MAKE-UP FRESH ALL NIGHT LONG
Primer. My top picks would be Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow, YSL Touche Éclat Blur Primer and MAC Strobe Cream. Then you should have a light powder to touch up as the evening goes on. I also think that using a creamy base helps keep your shadow from creasing - Eyes To Mesmerise by Charlotte Tilbury are stunning, as are MAC paint pots.
MY FAVOURITE SKINCARE LINE OF ALL TIME
Image Skincare, which was recommended to me by the skin queen Jennifer Rock, aka The Skin Nerd. My favourite products are the Daily Matte Moisturiser and the Intense Lightening Serum. I use them every morning and evening and they act as a fab make-up base.
THE ULTIMATE SECRET TO A PERFECT POUT
It's simple. Keep your lips hydrated. Use something like Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream or Chapstick, both classics. Then add a lip pencil that mimics the natural colour of your own lips and a moisturising lippy such as Bobbi Brown's Nourishing range of lipsticks.
MY INDUSTRY INSIDER BEAUTY SECRET
The best beauty tip I've picked up during my time working in broadcasting is to never use products with too much shimmer in them if you're taking pictures or going to be on TV. Remember that matte make-up is your friend when in front of the lens.
THE MOST COMMON BEAUTY BLUNDER WOMEN MAKE
In my opinion, it's probably not experimenting enough. Applying and wearing make-up should be fun! Play around with it and don't be afraid to try new things.
