Ruth Griffin: Create a picture perfect pout
How to imitate the 'Instapout' - without resorting to surgery
With plump lips jamming up social media platforms, beauty brands worldwide have seen a sharp increase in lipstick sales. As a result, this season see brands launching multiple new lip formulas, all promising to help you perfect the 'Instapout'.
Beauty insiders attribute this lip revolution to a celebrity-driven fondness for pouting selfies. The powerhouse behind it is Kylie Jenner who 'broke the internet' when she launched her own line of lip products. The Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kits sell out in minutes, so the only way to get your mitts on one is to keep a close eye on her social media (Instagram @kyliejenner) and kyliecosmetics.com for new launches. No matter how amazing this lip kit, or any other new lip product, may be, there is no way to exactly copy the pout of Miss Jenner - who has been open about her use of artificial lip fillers - without a trip to a surgeon's office. However, here I share a few non-surgical make-up technique tricks and tips that will help you on your way to the picture perfect Instapout…

5 of the best pout cheats
Put a (Lip)Line Under It
Lip liners went out of fashion in recent years, but are currently making a big comeback. Using a lip liner is the best way to properly define your mouth and enable you to apply lip colour all the way to the edge of the lip line (some make-up artists will apply a miniscule amount of very light brown lip liner outside the lip line to add fullness). I use MAC Boldly Bare, €22, all over my lips and then Lancôme Absolue Precious Cells, Nourishing Lip Balm (above), €50, to blend. Department stores nationwide.
For lip contouring and strobing, apply highlighter cream to your cupid's bow area and a tiny bit of darker contour powder under your bottom lip to create "shadows" around your mouth to create an illusion of fullness. Tidy your lip area by blending a thin amount of concealer around the corners of your mouth. Lastly a dab of gloss in the centre of your lips will make your lips look bigger. Try YSL Contouring Palette (above), €47, department stores nationwide.
Lip conditioning is essential for gorgeous-looking lips. Exfoliate with a sugar scrub and face cloth or an old toothbrush. Moisturise regularly with Vaseline or a non-camphor based lip balm. Lip sheet masks are becoming a really popular option - try the KNC All Natural Collagen Infused Lip Masks (above), €23, plus shipping.
Return of the Matte
Kylie Jenner seems to have single handedly been responsible for the increased popularity in matte lip products. Matte lips are really easy to apply but pretty difficult to remove.
TIP Try coconut oil, very warm water and a face cloth.
For some amazing dupes on Kylie's notoriously difficult-to-get lip kit colours, check out the following:
If you missed getting your hands on Kylie's Koko K try instead 1. Stila All Day Liquid Lipstick in Bellissima, €21; 2. Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream in Cannes, €9, could double as Kylie's Dolce K; 3. Maybelline Vivid Matte in Nude Thrill, €9.99, is equal to Kylie's Candy K; and 4. Catrice Velvet Matte Lip in Plumming Bird, €3.95, could be substituted for Kourt K.
Lipstick contouring is the easiest way to cheat your way to fuller lips. Firstly, put concealer all over the lip area. Apply neutral toned lip liner (Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk or Iconic Nude, pictured, €22, are amazing but not very long lasting I find) all the way to the very edge of your lips, remembering to go fully to the corners. Lightly blend the lip liner, then apply a slightly lighter shade of lipstick (I love MAC Shy Girl, €22) to give a fuller effect to the lips. All available Brown Thomas nationwide and BT2.

What do you think are the big upcoming trends in lipsticks?
There are two upcoming trends — metallic-look lipsticks with lots of shine and gloss are all in this season, and then on the flipside, the very matte liquid lip is continuing to be really popular.
What is your top tip on getting a fuller-looking pout?
Buy a lip liner and when applying, draw it right to the centre of your lip and then apply lipstick or gloss over it.
What is the biggest mistake women make when applying lipstick?
Not trying something new, and just sticking to their same old lipstick, when something different may suit them better.
What is your favourite lip product for a fuller-looking pout?
Flormar Delux Cashmere Matte Effect lipstick in DC 21 Natural Beige ¤5.95 and lip liner 201 ¤3.95 — they both have a long-lasting finish without being drying on the lips.
Do you think online influencers drive the beauty trend for fuller lips?
Yes — Kylie Jenner is the no.1 influencer for this fuller-lipped trend. We find that people look to social media a lot for new beauty looks. We’ve increased our lip products by 25pc this year and will look to increase it by another 25pc in the next few months, as lip sales are up by so much.
