The Pantone Institute have chosen a 'colour of the year' since 2000, and this year's choice is 'Living Coral'.

That means we can expect to see coral in everything from bags to bed sheets throughout this year, so why not keep ahead of the trend by adding it to your make-up bag now?

Perfect for springtime, when many of us are casting off our winter layers and looking to blossom into warmer weather, coral is a youthful, flattering, subtle colour that looks great on both lighter (opt for pale peachy coral tones) and darker skin tones (best to go for amber, coral, golden tones). Plus, it's a really grown-up way to add a wash of brightness to the face.

Play around with the shades, from delicate pink to warm peach, and take Coco Chanel's immortal advice when it comes to picking a colour for your face: "The best colour in the world is the one that suits you."

* MAC’s new Boom Bloom range is a collection of peach-, coral- and rose-toned lipsticks and warm neutral eye shadows in cherry blossom printed packaging. From Arnotts, Brown Thomas, BT2, MAC stores and The Loop.
