Miss Waterford

Joanna Kiernan

Joanna Kiernan

Lisa Kavanagh, 24, Faithlegg, Co Waterford, model and completed a Masters in Business Studies last year

What are your hobbies and interests?

I enjoy keeping fit, playing tennis and watching films. I also play the piano and have a great interest in fashion and beauty.

Why should you be Miss Universe?

Because I am a genuine, positive and friendly person who has been brought up with good morals and values. I am also a good communicator and fortunate to have had the opportunity to be well educated and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Physically, how would you rate yourself out of 10 and why?

I would rate myself eight out of 10. I am comfortable in my own skin and proud to be tall and curvy -- but no one is perfect.

Do you have a boyfriend?

Yes, I have a wonderful boyfriend named David.

What do you look for in a man?

The most important thing for me is that he is a genuine person with a great personality and makes me happy.

What is the most important thing you have learned in life?

That friends and family are the most important treasures that anyone can have.

What Irish politician would you most rate?

Brian Lenihan because he has had to make some tough decisions and has faced them head on. He has been so honest and open in relation to Ireland's situation and what needs to be done and the strategies he has taken have been widely acclaimed around the world. Also, in his personal life, he has been battling with illness, which makes his achievements over the last year all the more admirable.

If you could implement one thing in this country to help us out of the recession what would it be?

I would implement a job creation stimulus package targeted at recently qualified college graduates. I think this age group have found it particularly difficult to secure employment and many have had to emigrate. I think it's a shame that we are losing our talented young people and other countries are reaping the benefits.

What's your ultimate dream?

To be successful and happy in whatever I decide do.

Why have you entered this competition?

Because I would love to represent Ireland and feel that I would gain a lot from the experience as well as have a bit of fun.

If you were on a desert island and could bring three items, what would these be and why?

A solar-powered mobile phone so I could keep in contact with my friends and family; a tinted sunscreen to protect my skin and give me a little glow; and something comfortable to sleep on, because you can never get enough beauty sleep.

Are you a good girlfriend?

Yes, I try my best to be. My boyfriend tells me all the time that I'm a great girlfriend and I have a lovely relationship with all my girlfriends. I try to listen, encourage and advise my friends as best as I can and I love to see them all happy.

Would you consider yourself traditional in any way?

I would like to think that I am open-minded, as the world has changed a lot in the last 10 to 20 years. However, there is still a great sense of Irish tradition in my family and no matter where I go in the world I will always be proud to be Irish.

If you were to have plastic surgery what would you have done?

I would hope that I never have to have plastic surgery and that I will be able to work with what I've got.
