Triona McCarthy: Mimic that red-carpet glam with the latest make-up must-haves
Our columnist’s make-up staples will make skin glow, eyes glisten and heads turn at your next big event
I absolutely adore this time of the year when I have full-on fashion fever from awards season. I generally want to refresh my entire beauty booty and wardrobe when I see what’s happening on the red carpet, be it the Baftas, the Iftas, The Gossies or the fashion weeks in Paris, London and New York.
Tons of trends are making waves this month. Here are my go-to products that are sure to make you feel like a celeb or a supermodel at the next wedding, communion or bar/bat mitzvah you’re invited to.
It’s all about glass-like skin, dewiness and looking ‘lit from within’ but glowy make-up doesn’t actually start with make-up — it starts with skin care.
Charlotte’s Magic Cream, €66, arnotts.ie, by Charlotte Tilbury was created backstage by the MUA maestro as she often needed to get a model’s or a client’s skin into good shape quickly. Loaded with hyaluronic acid, rosehip, shea butter and aloe vera, this formula hydrates and fights inflammation.
Now we’re ready for foundation, so what better than the base red-carpet regulars such as Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Penelope Cruz use? Loved for its great staying power — up to 24 hours — this is smudge-proof and won’t transfer onto clothes. Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear, €34.42, boots.ie, focuses on skincare with hyaluronic acid, which visibly plumps the skin, as well as mandelic acid, which smooths things out.
Kash Beauty Rose Quartz Skin Glaze, €19.95, kashbeauty.com, creates a pop of colour on the complexion while adding that glazed finish, as seen on Bella Hadid on the red carpet.
Another must-have to ensure everything stays put for hours is a translucent powder. Sculpted by Aimee Velvet Veil Setting Powder, €24, sculptedbyaimee.com, is packed with skin-blurring micro-particles but it won’t cake on the skin, allowing it to breathe.
My top tip for longer-lasting lippy (especially when you’re wearing a statement shade) is to place a tissue over the lips and apply a very light layer of this powder.
Now that you’ve got your base ready, the lips are another great place to focus on, seeing as you’re bound to natter the night away. Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet, €45, brownthomas.com, is a line of matte lipsticks available in up to 46 colours that have a luminous finish and are mixed with jojoba oil for smooth, hydrated lips.
Max Factor Masterpiece 2 in 1 Lash Wow, €14.99, boots.ie, has a twistable brush wand that masters two looks, whether it’s volume or length you’re after. Water resistant and flake proof, this is what you need for the afters of any awards ceremony.
Three of the best… Fancy fragrances
1 Cosmoss Sacred Mist €140, Brown Thomas At the Dublin launch of her range, Kate Moss told me how she created this perfume — which has notes of jasmine, tuberose and geranium — to calm and lift her mood, particularly on the red carpet when she needs grounding.
2 Valentino Born in Roma €89.10 for 50ml, Boots I went to the launch of this fragrance in Paris and partied the night away. This vibrant scent has top notes of bergamot infusion, heart notes of jasmine and base notes of vanilla in a stunning studded bottle.
3 Giorgio Armani My Way €76 for 30ml, Brown Thomas A new take on Armani’s much-loved floral yet woody scent with citrus top notes, My Way has responsibly sourced ingredients and a fab refillable bottle in inky blue and radiant pink.
