Golden girls: Triona McCarthy discovers the best face powders
We have got the Midas touch, as our beauty buff finds the best face powders, a glow-getting nail varnish and a wonder body cream
Remember when you thought baby powder was made from babies? No? Oh, it was just me then? Ha ha ha! That's the kind of silly thing that I bet doesn't make you laugh, it just makes you blow a bit more air out of your nose. At least that's what I do when I half-laugh at something.
Now, where was I? Oh yes, powdering your nose!
When I see a powder compact, I'm always reminded of my Granny Aggy, who always had one in her handbag, not that I would ever be, em, rummaging in it - I used to tidy it out for her and maybe try out her make-up and perfume and sweets!
Anyhoo, face powders have come a long way since those heavy ones my Granny used.
Now, for a flawless finish, it's all about illuminating powders. If contouring isn't your thing, an illuminating powder gives a fabulous, fresh-faced glow. Try Bobbi Brown's new Nude Finish Illuminating Powder, above, €50. Use it all over the face to lift the complexion, or use with a Bobbi Brown Angled Face Brush, €44, for a soft, strobing effect on the forehead and the top of your cheekbones.
The Balm's Mary Lou Manizer, below, €21.50, is also a must-have. It has quite the cult following as it's a highlighter, shimmer and eyeshadow in one. The Champagne-hued highlighter is designed to give you a healthy glow, and can be used on the cheek or the brow bones for definition, or all over the face for a subtle glow.
Is there anything worse than spending a flipping fortune on a fab new product, only for it to dry out and become redundant in no time? This has happened to me a few times with gel eyeliners and brow gels, so what I do now is - even when I'm using them - I turn the pot upside down so very little air gets in to dry out my precious prettifiers!
As a qualified beauty therapist and as a beauty writer for many years, it's fair to say I've been around, and I've seen it all. There are a lot of wonder products that promise the sun, moon and stars, but are actually . . . rhymes with 'kite'.
'Perfect Brows in less than two minutes' is what it said on the box of WunderBrow 1-Step Brow Gel, above €29.95 each, and I thought, 'Here we go again!' So I was pretty amazed that this did exactly what it said, and it lasted for days! It comes in four colours, above right, from left: Blonde; Auburn; Brunette; and Black/ Brown. There's no faffing about with a feckin' five-step kit as this is an all-in-one product. Simply use the lip-gloss-like applicator as you would a nail varnish, by tapping the excess product off on the edge of the tube, and then gradually apply the hair-like fibers bit by bit.
These fibers, combined with specifically treated pigments designed to fasten onto skin and hair, create a flexible matrix, locking the natural colour and hairs onto your brows to fill them out fabulously.
Make it up
South Lotts Road in D4 not only has the most marvellous grocer, Lotts & Co, but also there's make-up artist Emma Farrell's studio, EF Creative, where I had my make-up and photo, above, done this week, in the beautiful, upcycled space.
Emma and her terrific team are trying to normalise the idea of getting your make-up done before a night out, and not just for a special occasion, in the same way you'd get your hair or your nails done. So, she only charges €30 for make-up application, so you can look all aglow like Jennifer Lopez, above, after having Emma do your face.
Emma does that 'me, only better' look so well, and not that scary tranny look a lot of places do when they pile on the make-up, and then you have to take it all off when you get out!

Time sure flies when you're getting old!
I can't believe Will and I have been together now for five years. Five years!
Are you sick of me going on about him yet? I still love that man so much; he who was brave enough to go out with me, and strong enough that when he hugged me, he stuck all the broken bits back together.
Are you doing gagging faces now, pretending to throw up? I'm sorry, I just had to say it.
Anyhoo, speaking of bits (see what I did there?), my body isn't really ready for summer viewing. It's like Lego - in bits.
So when I tried out this Sanctuary Spa Wonder Body Cream, above, €11, it needed to work really hard . . . and, guess what, it did!
This body moisturiser does it all. It tones, hydrates and gives the most gorgeous glow as it's tinted and has blur technology, so it's really good at hiding imperfections, and it smells really good!
It makes me look and feel just gorgeous.
So, it's a real-life wonder cream, and if it was a person, it would be Will. OK, I'm stopping now.
Did I mention I have a boyfriend?
PS: Never give up on love!
I've just noticed nearly everything on the page this week is a golden-y colour! Having always been a silver-y person, I've gone gaga for gold, so Sally Hansen's Complete Salon Manicure in You Glow Girl, above, €8.99, is on my nails as I type. Remember, I think of my nails as an accessory! This is a base, colour, top coat and strengthening treatment in one bottle. #goldfingers
