Andrea Byrne: Five of the best matte blushers available
We all love a bit of shimmer, particularly on our cheeks, but sometimes it's not always appropriate, like, say, when we're at the gym, or at a funeral, or when you reach a certain point in your life. Also, if your skin isn't in great nick, avoid shimmery blushers as they will emphasise imperfections and enlarged pores. If your skin is oily, powder works better than creams, gels, or tints at keeping shine at bay.
The colour you choose is a matter of taste, but there are shades that look better on certain skin tones. Also, the right shade, applied in the right way, can make you look years younger.
Soft, rose or baby pink shades, like Benefit's Dandelion, look great on fair-skinned women. Favoured by brides, MAC's Rosy Outlook is equally flattering on pale skin as it gives a natural flush. And its Pro Longwear formula means it's built to last!
Any skintone can pull off a shock of red on the cheeks provided it's applied correctly. Nars Matte Multiple in Siam is a gorgeous, fun, fresh, youthful shade, but should be applied with a lightness of hand, particularly by fair-skinned folk. It's one of the few cheek products on the market that offers a matte finish, in a non-powder formula.
Peach shades tend to be universally flattering, but those veering towards a more orangey, apricot hue are better suited to darker complexions.
Bobbi Brown's powder blush in Tawny is a beautiful light brown shade that really complements a tan. It stays put all day too.
There is so much love out there for NYX's extensive blusher collection, and with good reason too. They're affordable, good quality and they're made to last. If you're focusing on your eyes and lips, and therefore would prefer a more muted blush, NYX's Dusty Rose adds dimension to the face without impacting on or overshadowing what's going on elsewhere.
In terms of choosing the right powder formula, opt for something that is finely milled and is soft to touch. Avoid anything chalky.

Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF30, €39.99, Dermalogica, available in selected salons nationwide.
Although it looks worryingly like my Granny's heavy beige foundation coming out of the tube it looks great once applied and really even outs my skin tone, making it smoother and with a bit of a healthy glow. If I'm having a lazy day I'll even just wear it on its own.
Bee Venom Mask, €55, Abeeco, available in selected salons nationwide and themakeupbox.ie.
I always travel with some kind of facemask in tow. The Abeeco Mask has the consistency of a thick moisturiser so it's really handy to have on the road, you can wander through the airport or jump out of the car without looking like a mud-covered weirdo, like I sometimes do! After using it for a while now I think it has really worked.
Molecule 01, €75, Escentric Molecules, available in Harvey Nichols, Dublin.
About three years ago, I was working with a lady who smelled divine! When I finally got brave enough to ask her what fragrance she was wearing, the answer was Molecule 01 - I've been wearing it ever since. It supposedly smells different on everyone and is very understated.
