Top make-up artist Leonard Daly offers invaluable tips on getting a sophisticated daytime and evening look.
For a flawless foundation, I recommend Tom Ford's Traceless liquid foundation (€70) because it looks like skin, not make-up, with just the right amount of coverage.
New to the market, it is a hero product in my kit, as is the Laura Mercier Secret Setting Powder.
Finely milled, it makes your make-up last all day. (See below)
For the eyes
I started out with the Dior Palette 708 (€54), using the eyeliner first to get the dark shape that I wanted. It is one of the few palettes available with a cream eyeliner.
Don't forget, a thin line will make your eyelashes look thicker
Back to Tom Ford again for his eye shadows in Cocoa Mirage and Violet Dusk (€75 each), on the outer area of the eyelid to create the illusion of a bigger eye.
Curling eye lashes is not just for night time. For a strong daytime look, I recommend you define your lashes using the Shu Uemura Lash Curlers (€24), followed by the Dior Lash Maximiser (€31.50) as a base, topped up with Armani Eyes to Kill (€29) mascara.
For the lips
I wanted a red lip but not too intense, so I used YSL Rouge No 24 (€31) applied as a base and Armani 400 (€26) on top to add a deeper red tone.
While I used my fingers to apply Alison's foundation, I recommend you invest in a good brush to blend eyeshadow.
Other recommended buys are: Laura Mercier large brush (€48); MAC brushes for eyes (priced from €20); Tom Ford lip brush (€42) and Nars blusher brush (€58).
For the evening
Start your evening look with the MAC Face & Body foundation (€36), which represents great value because it is double the size of most other foundation bottles.
You can use it on your arms, body and legs. I then used MAC Pro Longwear concealer (€17.50).
Similar to the daytime look, I used Laura Mercier's Secret Setting Powder and the Secret Brightening Powder (€27) -- brilliant for erasing dark circles under your eyes.
Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate (€65) is another hero product for the party season (see tip 2 below), while Sisley Phyto Touche (€79) in Fair is one of my favourite bronzers -- it suits Irish complexions and gives you a sun-kissed look without making you look tangoed.
For the eyes
I started the eyes with Bobbi Brown black gel liner (€22) right along the lash line and set it with Laura Mercier's Deep Night eyeshadow (from €27).
The Tom Ford quad has fabulous colours such as Violet Dusk and Copper (€75 per quad palette).
After curling the lashes, I applied YSL Volume mascara (€31) and Shu Uemura Farfallina lashes, which may sound expensive at €24 but you can use them time and time again. They also have a long strip of continual lashes (€19) which you can cut to shape.
For an extra party touch, add a touch of Shu Uemura Gold (€13) on the inner corner and under the inner eye to add a little sparkle. (See below)
For the lips
To finish off, I used NARS Train Blue lipstick pencil (€25) and matching gloss.
Use a lip balm when you are cleansing and prepping the skin. That way, it will soak in and make your lips more supple for later when you are applying lipstick. It is especially effective if you plan
Use the Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate (¤65) product to shade and highlight. The creams are brilliant for contouring the face and getting that healthy, glowing sheen. Don’t be put off by the brown colour. It looks terrifying but, once it is blended under the cheekbone with a brush, it creates a shadow and gives the illusion of strong cheekbones.
The trick to great mascara is to get into the root and use a zig-zag motion before pulling away slowly, stretching the lashes out. This deposits more product at the root of the lashes and they appear longer as they get thinner.
When putting on false eyelashes, first curl them around your finger or a make-up brush and this stops them popping up at one end. The curved Shu Uemura eyelash applicator (€32) is a really handy tool, less frightening than using a tweezers. Place the false lash on to your own lash line and then manouevre them into place. Lashes with a mix of brown and black hair look more natural.
