'I got sick of the Cruella de Vil jokes!'
Grey hair isn't just for grannies, insists Powerscourt Townhouse tour guide Shireen Marcus (64) from Dublin.
"Deciding to go grey four years ago was very scary. After 20 years as a bottle brunette, though, I'd had enough. At first, I just had a silver streak at the front. However, I soon got sick of the 'Cruella de Vil' gags -- and decided to go fully grey for my 60th birthday.
"With the help of my hairdresser Marcus at SitStil, it took about a year to transition from black to grey. But I'm thrilled with the results. People can't believe that this is my natural hair colour -- everyone thinks I dye it.
"My biggest tip for other women considering going grey is to get a modern cut so that it doesn't look old-ladyish. You also have to make an effort with your make-up. Grey hair combined with casual clothes and no make-up is not a good look. Sometimes when I look at myself in the mirror in the morning, I scare myself. As soon I put on my red lipstick, though, I look and feel amazing.
"Greying gracefully definitely takes confidence. When you get to a certain age, though, you just go for it!"
