Introducing the 'mob' – stylish celebrity mothers are loving this hairstyle
It's no secret the bob is having a moment.
Supermodel trendsetters Kendall Jenner and Karlie Kloss led the path from a high fashion perspective, aligning with the styles they wore with Gucci and Prad earlier this year, but now HQOTW (Hair Queen of the World) Kate Middleton has finally joined the club.
She's 35, a mother of two and has an undeniable amount of fashion kudos, where she aligns with two other women in Ireland who beat her to the punch - Amy Huberman and Pippa O'Connor.
"I think they’re paying homage to the shorter bob, which is having a major moment," Aoife Bradley, master stylist at Dylan Bradshaw told Independent.ie
"Their bobs are under the jaw, but for someone like Kate Middleton, an under the jaw bob is not going to happen. Cutting her hair six inches was big enough: she’s paying homage to what’s happening in the fashion world. It’ s risky, but badly needed. Her hair has been the same way since we first saw her and she needs to make a fashion statement.
"They’re dressing her like she’s in her 50s, but she’s only 35 – her hair already makes her look younger. This is the start of, I think we’ll start to see more risks with her and her fashion; she has more freedom with this new hair cut."
On our shores, the world's media aren't exactly on their every move, but both have a few hundred thousand Instagram followers who emulate their every move - whether it's buying a Zara blazer or popping into the hairdressers to get a new bob.
"Pippa has always been at the fashion forefront, I find she’s a great risk-taker with hair. The ‘lob’ has now gone into the full bob, it’s the same with Amy Huberman," Aoife added.
"Karlie Kloss and Kendall Jenner both did it over four months ago. When you see huge celebrities or models doing it, the rest of us follow.
"The bob is huge for this year. This lob is gone. The style we’ll see now is just above the collarbone under the jaw – it’s going to be huge for 2017 going into 2018."
Long hair is over: it's all about getting that cut and colour just right instead of looking like you've been at the beach all day.
"The hair gets tried looking, the balyage isn’t lasting and women are getting tired of trims so they’re cutting it off and starting fresh. It’s more and more natural, women are going for natural and glossy hair, Kate has done that," she added.
But Aoife, who won a International L’Oreal Colour Trophy Award Lisbon last October for a bob, said she would still love to get her hands on Kate's hair.
"It’s how it’s worn, it’s going to look better in a style whether it be long or short, it needs to be styled. It was just dragging her down," she added.
"I’m a bit sad about it – they’ve cut it, but they’re styling it the same way. What we’re doing over the next year is going to be very relaxed and very soft – blowdrying in a soft, volumous way instead of going in with tongs. It’s very contrived; it’s stuck in its place.
"I would like to go up another two inches, I would like to have a soft undone wave rather than this over the top done where she looks like she’s going to a wedding constantly. I’d want her to look her age across the board."
